    Grrr! This Magnifier Thing!

I've been tinkering with RC2 and have managed to get the Magnifier to start at boot up. (The screen is split into two horizontal panes and I have to click numerous times on the "X" to finally close the doggone thing.) I've not been able to find how to keep the Magnifier from starting automatically at boot up. I guess that will teach me to fiddle with things... Any help in making this crazy thing go away is earnestly sought by this ol' country boy. Thanks!

I think what happened is that you shut down Windows before turning off the magnifier. Windows then assumes you want it up the next time you boot. Try going to Task Manager and shut it down from there....then reboot. If it is still coming up, go into Regedit and scroll to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce and see if Windows added a Magnifier entry to it in the right panel. If so, delete the entry for it (in the right panel, not the left panel key), then reboot.

    Hi bistro,

Many thanks for the suggestions. I had no RunOnce entry in HKey_Current _User, but there is one in HKey_Local_Machine. I didn't find anything that appeared to be the Magnifier in it, nor in the Run key in either place. There was one item residing in Run that I didn't know what was, so I exported the Registry settings before nuking it and rebooting. The Magnifier came up again.

I then attempted to Import that backup of the Registry to set it back like it was, but the process balked with an error message that it could not do so. Strange, methinks... Though perhaps not related, I've also found that the System Restore mechanism is not able to create a Restore Point. I think I'll wipe this installation after while and do a fresh install of RC2. I'm sure that the Magnifier will not start then, for I'll not mess with it any further.

    Have a good one!

    A quick follow up...

I decided to go back to XP Pro. Have just finished doing a fresh install of it and doing the related updating, which is always a lot of fun.

I like Vista a lot but will wait a year or so before making the switch to it...
