    Windows Power Management Problem

Hi All, bit of a wierd problem i get 'em all, Not Really serious but defenatly anoying!

My system is an HewlettPackard 8730 UK version Athlon850, with TNT2, SB1024, 512mbRAM...Win98 1st Edition (couldn't get SE to work (slow file transfer n stuff))

Think this is easyist way of explaining the prob...
When i go into display properties/screen saver/settings and in the ADVANCED POWER MANAGEMENT PROPERTIES There should be the following:
    1. system standby (60 mins)
    2. turn off monitor (30 mins)
    3. turn off hard disks (60 mins)

basically #2. "turn off monitor" is missing totaly, there is just a blank space where it used to be, also when i 1st noticed this i also discoved that refresh rate was set manually to 85hz insteed of optimal (85hz)

If i set other 2 settings that are left to "never" the monitor still shuts down after 10mins which was what i last set it to b4 it disapeared, i have tryed restoring several old backups and this still did not fix it, i have even reinstalled from scratch and its ok untill i install any version of TNT2 detonator graphics drivers. I dont understand i thought (and still do) a image backup was suposed to restore everything.

The setting has disapeared (huh??) but it still activates its-self(shuts down the monitor) this is becoming quite anoying as i hav 2 move the mouse every 8ish mins when burning CD or watching a film etc, Any Ideas on fixing it

Is it possible that bios or reg settings could be causing this??? or is it more likely that graphics card is knackered???

If u need any more info just ask, this pc is doing my head in, its just 1 thing after another. i thought that u should also know that i am not using the supplied WinSE recovery CD because all i get is total lockups when playing games so i abandoned it and its never crashed on a game since (3weeks) only dvd's a few times!

So as u can imagine i am not overly impressed with the tolal package i bought, and because i didnt get fed up with the main probs till after a month, HP want me to pay for support (nice1 HP)...ahh well, life init...

so if any1 out there has had same prob wiv power management then could you be kind enough to share some help wiv me...

Thanx in advance for any help, most appreciated.

I'm not familiar with HP, but if you know how to enter the BIOS, i would suggest you see if Power management is enabled there. And, if so, turn it off. Then take a look and see if your monitor setting in Windoze is still greyed-out.
Sorry not to be able to help more, but maybe the "bump" will get someone more knowledgeable's attention.

Wild guess? The drivers for your vid card wipe out the option in screen saver. Did you go to HP's site to see if they have a fix? Did you upgrade the vid card and this started happening or is this a day one problem. Get to the bios and disable the power management and then start-run-msconfig-start up tab and uncheck the Load power profile boxes and click apply then reboot. Let us know if that worked.
When I upgraded my vid card to a geforce 2 mx it also loaded a utility called Expert tool and this disabled my power management until I reconfigured it. Most will tell you not to use it at all(power management) and mine was disabled for months but I've re-enabled it(Is that a word?) to give it a try and so far so good.

    thanx for the replys,

the BIOS dosn't seem to have any power managment settings that i find, and in windows the sitting isn't just grayed out its conpletely gone as if its never been there.

right then...this is NOT a prob from day 1 it only started a week ago after installing a demo program called TV Tool for the graphics card (used for enlarging display area on TV etc) the demo only lasted for 10mins so i got rid of it, rather than just deleting it i have a habit of restoring a backup from a couple of days ago to be sure it is completly of the system (i do the same for most software i try) so there should be no trace of it left.

I hav discovered that if i reinstall from the recovery CD all is OK until i upgrage to the latest or newer drivers. and also that if i set adaptor to standard PCI the setting comes back until i reinstall proper drivers.

Ahh Yes didn't know about disabling the loadpowerprofile in msconfig, but i tried it and this does stop it from shutting down completly, i've left it alone for over an hour anyway and it was still on, thats how its set at the moment.

So we've now worked out how to get rid of nasty side effects, Cool but i dont really wanna leave it like that, i'd prefer if it was working properly since i've never had any major probs wiv it in the past.

has any1 else wiv same gfx card who tried tv tool had the same prob? Could this program hav changed the firmware of gfx card or BIOS settings? because this definatly dont seem like a software/windoze prob, as it worked b4 cool and i hav gone back to various FULL IMAGE BAKUPS with no luck...im confused ...just a personal opinion but i think tv tool has knackered my gfx card. is this possible? or what would you sugest to do.

    Thanx alot all
