Thumbs down Viruses, popups with new computer

Help help! I just got a new Compaq Presario, Windows XP preinstalled including SP2. I have reloaded AVG antivirus, run HijackThis (found a lot of stuff), run ZoneAlarm pro at all times, and the virus program is kept up to date. I have AdAware, Pest Patrol, etc.

No matter what I do, the popups and viruses seem to come back! I don't know what to do. I've never seen anything like this wherein I couldn't root everything out.

    Thanks
    Wendy

Sometimes a fresh install is the only way. Before giving up I would update your junk killing programs again, reboot in safe mode, and run them. If you can find the source you should be able to prevent it from happening again.
Otherwise there is no shame in wiping things clean to get a fresh start. Protecting is so much easier than restoring.

I would also turn off System Restore just in case the nasties are lurking there.

Well, happiness is mine at last. What seemed to stop the malware and popups finally was Pest Patrol. Wammo. Along with ZoneAlarm, AdAware, AVG Antivirus and Hijack This. I must say it's frightening how many weapons are needed these days.

Hey Doc. Thanks for the reminder. I did turn off System Restore when nuking the nasties.

    Cheers
