[RESOLVED] Win98 \ WinMe Bootdisks don't recognise DVD RW using MSCDEX
The title says it all - I think.
It goes through all the steps of loading OAKCDROM.SYS and all the other *.SYS files but none of them cause the DVD RW drive to be recognised as a CD Rom.
Any ideas ?
It's an NEC DVD RW 3520a (I think)

Could it be that the DVD drive is conencted via SATA, I think I saw that in the BIOS somewhere.

About now is when I would start from scatch again with a 98SE with no ramdrive from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Do you have a burning program that will make the dvd bootable? And when you burn, slow the burn rate to half the speed of the dvd.
See if that helps.

Sorry I think there is some confusion.
If boot a bootable CD with Win98 or WInMe start up disk files, it brings up the menu and then if I choose with CD-Rom Support when it goes to load MSCDEX in Autoexec.bat it comes up with an error Device driver not found MSCD001 the same CD work on my old system that has a CD-ROM and a CD-RW.
My new system, 2 days old has only DVDRW no floppy drive so I'm using floppy emulation on CD-ROM or USB flash drive.
Either way Iget the same error at the point it ries to load MSCDEX

Hmm I vaguely remember on my old PC that it had troubles when more than one device was loaded in this section
Code:
[CD]
device=himem.sys /testmem:off
device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
device=btdosm.sys
device=flashpt.sys
device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
device=aspi2dos.sys
device=aspi8dos.sys
device=aspi4dos.sys
device=aspi8u2.sys
device=aspicd.sys /D:mscd001
and came across a site that says for SCSI drives to just use the 5 aspi*.sys files.
So maybe I'll do a step by step and try that.

Just spotted that post.
That is what is chewing on you .
Remove the scsi
device=aspi2dos.sys
device=aspi8dos.sys
device=aspi4dos.sys
device=aspi8u2.sys
device=aspicd.sys
and see if you can add the sata drivers.
May have to edit the autoexec.bat with a line referencing the sata drivers.
Better yet, got a old cd-rom you can use ?
Make a boot cd-r and with the cd-rom hooked to the ide you should be good to go.

Well the scsi were originally commented out but i uncommented them to see if that worked.

Should be on the mobo cd or the cd that came with the card. If that is what you are using.

Well it's a 2 day old Dell system and to be honest I haven't even looked at what CDs / DVDs came with the system.
I'll check them out tonight.
Thanks for helping so far.

Well I couldn't find anything specific on the drivers CD but tried testing to see if it would boot from that CD as it said it was a utility / drivers CD.
It did boot and so then I changed to A: and had a look at the config.sys and saw it was using a file called EXTCD.SYS
Modified my Autoexec.bat and config.sys to sue that file and it worked and recognised the DVDRW.
Oddly this link for the file http://support.dell.com/support/down...1&fileid=67289 implies it's for USB and Firewire - although for an internal drive, I wouldn't think they'd be connected that way.

Odd as it seems, I would not bet against anything Dell may do.
Heck the website could be mislabled too.
Can you say propietary drivers are back again.
