Resolved [RESOLVED] Adding a wireless card to second machine...

I'm getting into an area that I admittedly know little about. In a nutshell, my daughter has a desktop machine with XP Pro that is running fine. She has DSL there for Internet connectivity.

She has a laptop that connects to the Internet via wireless connectivity. (The guy told her when installing the DSL hookup that the modem he was installing had wireless capability.) As mentioned, that no doubt is true since she connects wirelessly with her laptop.

I intend to give her a second desktop machine (also running XP Pro) that she will put in another area of her house. Is all that's needed is for me to obtain a wireless card and put it in the second box? Any help is appreciated.

    Happy Computing!

    Hi Limerick,

That is pretty much all you need to do. Install the wireless adapter in a second computer and it should connect to the Internet. The device is probably a wireless DSL modem router. It would be a good idea to secure the wireless network. If you are connecting without any kind of encryption key then it also possible for other people within range can connect as well.

If you need additional help on securing your wireless network, providing the make and model number of the device will help us.

    As an update on this:

Ordered the wireless card from Newegg a few days ago and installed it here in my daughter's machine last night. While it didn't connect to the Internet "straight out of the box", I got it up and going after a little digging around in the software configuration...

This wireless stuff is really cool! I'm glad that I've expanded my knowledge a little on this project. All seems to be working fine. Thanks again, Eric.
