EA Battlefield 2142 has Spyware included
Quote:
"When you open the box, a big slip of paper falls out first, preceeding any discs or manuals. The slip of paper says, essentially, that 2142 includes monitoring software which runs while your computer is online, and records "anonymous" information like your IP address, surfing habits (probably via cookie scans), and other "computing habits" in order to report this information back to ad companies and ad servers, which generates in-game ads."

If it wasn't bad enough that you need to spend a lot of money on a system to run the game.

There's a statement from EA here: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/18/ea...s-iga-spyware/
I like this bit:
"IF YOU DO NOT WANT IGA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE OR TRANSMIT THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, DO NOT INSTALL OR PLAY THE SOFTWARE ON ANY PLATFORM THAT IS USED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET."

The same thing goes for "Need For Speed: Carbon" aswell.

My question is, what is in it for the customer??? Have they lowered the price of the game? Or is it completely free?
The price on Amazon.com is $45. That shows that its neither free, nor cheaper for the customer. The profit for the advertising goes into the fat pockets of EA. This is absolutely sickening!!! This deserves to be boycotted!

I'm just wondering if they're gonna bring this kind of thing to the consoles, as they have the same online setup with MMORPG's etc, they are just trying to avoid a lawsuit, because if they hadn't told people about it and someone found out then there would be more outrage, this way they can lose custom straight away.

Personally, I am a sucker for realism. I like the idea of real life adverts in games. I may even have been able to live with the spyware on the computer (as long as it doesn't do any damage). But for them to pocket all the profits for the advertisements instead of making the game free or much cheaper is disgusting. No more EA!!!

Amen too that poppy, i was almost contemplating the purchase of 2142. I mean after all i really enjoy my BF2 and my friends BF:1942. The asking price at the local stores here is CDN$89.00 which roughly comes out to about $115 after tax. Thanks for the tip i wont waste the money. Too me there should be a bond between product developers and the happy consumers that purchase there game. That bond is fragile and can easily be broken by a flop of a game. (IE = Instibility, Pour Gameplay, No Support) But i think this deffinetly takes the cake for shattering that trust you put in them too guarentee the Privacy of your information. I have said it before and i will say it again. Privacy Is Dead!!
