Need to run CHKDSK but my comp keeps re booting
Ok, so I am not very computer savy. I need some serious help. About 3 weeks ago I had my computer on when the power went out. When I turned it back on everything seemed normal. When I turn on my computer each day it has an alert message. (Alert previous fan failure press f1 to continue or f2 for set up. The fan has been replaced and works properly). So I press F1 and continue to boot up. Now normaly it would boot properly and I continue on to windows. But now It says it needs to check the disk for consistancy. It gives me a countdown of 10 seconds and then starts. It says starting step 1 of three. Now here is where my problem starts. It gets anywhere from 10 percent to as much as 98 percent on the first step and then my computer reboots back to my alert message. I continue on through like normal and everything starts over again. It never gets past step one. Now I can cancel the disk check and get to windows and even get online (well obviously). But I would like to run the complete chkdsk to fix my problem. Any help at this point would be appreciated.

It sounds like you're having problems with hardware, probably temperature related. I would take the side of the case off and point a house fan into it, and see if you can get it to get through the scan. It wouldn't surprise me if another fan is still failing even after you replaced it. Or the fan controller could be failing.

It's always good to tell us what operating system your running. Seeing as how you said 'checkdisk',I assume it's XP? Nevertheless,go to Start>run> and type in "chkdsk /r" (with the space but no quotes). Click ok or press enter. You will get a dos box offering to run checkdisk at next boot if you press 'Y'. Do so. The box will go away. Re-boot and it should run during boot-up. This may stop the glitches so chkdsk can run all the way to a proper finish.
Stupid question? No such thing!

Nope still only gets about 85 percent finished on the first step.re boots and starts over again.I tried the fan too but no luck. I have always had that alert message though and was told it was normal from a dell tech.

Go to the Command Prompt (All Programs>Accessories) and type "chkntfs /D" without the quotes. That should reset chkdsk, and hopefully you'll be OK.

Next time it reboots, go into bios and note the temps. Post them.
Wondering if the overheating alert is set to low myself.

Download and run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility (they run from floppy, there is no need to boot into Windows), and see what that says. Here are the most common ones:
Seagate Seatools
IBM / Hitachi Drive Fitness Test
Maxtor Maxblast 3
Maxtor PowerMax
Western Digital Software & Drivers
Fujitsu Utilities
Samsung Drive Utilities
