    Installing XP Home from M.E.

    Hi

I decided to go to XP with an upgrade from M.E. When I tried to install XP it went to the point where I connected to the internet to down load the latest Microsoft updates. The computer stopped and disconnected me from the internet. I called support and they said I had an OEM version of M.E. and gave me some options of which one was "Support.microsoft.com/GP/wusupport". I went there and sent an e-mail. They confirmed that they got the e-mail and would respond in one business day. This is the third business day. Am I not allowed to install the upgrade from an OEM disk? Can I say no to performing Dynamic Update? Is there any way to contact Microsoft? They sure know how to alienate you.

    Thanks

OEM operating systems are sold at a big discount. Part of the discount is that the buyer/computer maker has to support the OS...
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

Don't try upgrading - it never works very well, and you always get problems of one sort or anotherI would strongly advise you to bite the bullet and consider doing a clean install of WinXP. Win9x and WinNT-based OS's such as XP are utterly different and never upgrade well at all. In my experience there are always glitches and problems of one sort or another, such as you are experiencing. If you boot up with a WinXP Upgrade CD and run Setup, it will eventually ask to see your WinME CD to make sure that you are entitled to use the Upgrade version, but will otherwise do a clean installation of WinXP just the same as the Full version.

    Clean Install XP Pro

    Attended Install of Windows XP

    Clean install Windows XP
