[RESOLVED] defrag questions restore point fragmentation?
hello all,
i have a simple question, i have the following report of an analysis of hdd partion c...i am constantly adding and removing new trial software...i have my hdd set as two partitons C and D and this is the result of the analysis before defrag..(xp sp2) i have since deleted the temp internet files...THE QUESTION seems a majority of the fragmentation is in restore points..should i delete older ones?? and would fragmentation in those restore points even come into play in ordinary operation? thanks john
P.S. oh also in the intallers?

jwisneski-- You are probably aware that Windows automatically creates at least one Restore Point every 24 hours or so.
You set the amount of space that Restore Points can use on the HardDrive from System Properties (right click My Computer|Properties|System Restore tab|Settings). When you reach that limit, each new Restore point will automatically delete the oldest Restore Point. The smaller you make that space, the fewer Restore Points, the fewer files to defrag and the faster defrag will complete. I believe a setting between 5 and 10% of the HD size is normal.
However I do not believe manually deleting Restore Points is a good idea, even the older ones. Data from each previous Restore Point is used in making a System Restore. You can, however, either delete all Restore Points or all but the last without adverse effect. As Windows deletes older Restore Points, it apparently has some way of passing on the data to the remaining Restore Points. As I understand it, that is not the case if you manually delete Restore Points.
So if you want fewer Restore Points, decrease the harddrive space alloted as mentioned above. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/pro.../faqsrwxp.mspx

If the computer is running fine with no hiccups.... after I have cleaned up the typical HD mess of spyware, left over junk from previously installed software and GBytes of temporary internet files... I disable System Restore, reboot in Safe mode and do a defrag. Once that is done I reboot in normal mode and re-enable System Restore.
Seems to work well for me.
hi welshjim and herring,
i changed the amount of space used for restore points and that seems to have done the trick i also used a third party defrag ((AusLogics (got from downloads.com)) and completed the dfrag in a resonable time....THANKS john
