    Mouse became too sensitive/precise

Hi. Starting around June, my mouse suddenly become much too sensitive or precise. This was noticeable in every game I played under Windows 98. My hardware hadn't changed at all. I have since tried another of the same mouse, mousepad, motherboard, you name it. I even tried a whole different computer. The mouse is just too fast, so I have eliminated it down to a software issue. Since it appears too fast on other people's computers, it leads me to believe something changed in June that set it back to "normal". Perhaps before I was playing with a mouse that was being slowed down somehow. Well, I'm trying to find a way to get back. Simply modifying the sensitivity in control panel doesn't produce the same effect. The mouse is like too precise. Before, it would skip pixels a lot and stuff, moving in clumps, which is actually what I want. Anyway, it's an Intellimouse Explorer 1.0. I tried a fresh Windows 98 installation, Windows ME, XP, still too fast. That's why I believe it was something that was slowing it down before and I didn't realize it. I know it's a longshot, but can anyone think of anything to look into?

    Thanks.

Is this an optical mouse? Does it have a ball?

I am no tech but I would D/L the latest version of the mouse drivers from the manufacturers web site and save it to a known folder location. They may be in some kind of compressed format that you will probably need to uncompress but do not install at this time. Then boot up in safe mode and remove the drivers that you are using now. Always remove mouse drivers in safe mode by the way. After proper removal of old drivers reboot your computer. Your computer will detect your mouse and want to install drivers for it. Direct it to the location where you D/L'd the latest drivers from the manufacturer to and let your computer install them. Reboot your computer after the install and set your mouse speeds using the mouse properties found in the "programs" folder.

    Try going to:
    START/SETTINGS/CONTROL PANEL.
    Click on mouse.
Under POINTER OPTIONS, see if changing the speed helps.

Thanks, but nothing. All the games I play seem to be unaffected by the windows mouse setting.

I have something I want to test. My mouse came with a usb to ps2 adaptor. However, when using it on my computer the mouse isn't even detected and it doesn't even light up. Any ideas?

Edit: even ps2 mice don't turn on... Strange.

Ok, well after a lot of research, I came to the conclusion either one of two things is out of whack: the mouse acceleration or the mouse dpi. The problem is, I have no idea how to change either of these. My theory is somehow one of them got lowered in the past and I didn't realize it. I would like to find a way to lower them again to test my theory. None of the control panel mouse settings have any effect in my dos game in windows 98 apparently. Of course, I've always had windows 98, so I know that's not the problem. Is there any possible way to change the dpi or acceleration? Or, does anyone know where I can get like a 200 dpi optical mouse?

Well, still stuck with this problem for almost a year now. It really frustates me. I've tried whole different computers basically, and brand new windows 98 installations. I tried this mouse that lets you change the dpi all the way down to 100 dpi, no luck. So, my only thought is the acceleration is the problem. The reason I say this is simple: the dos game I play uses a defined config file which is exactly the same as it was for years. It saves no settings anywhere in the registry or whatnot. However, somehow, I just started playing one day and the mouse was so insanely fast, it made no sense. It is just way too sensitive, like 10 times more it feels like. I have eliminated refresh rate and dpi as the causes. I have essentially ruled out hardware by trying different computers and also because my hardware never changed when it messed up. Now, the only thing I can think of is the acceleration. Some program or some file must have changed my acceleration years ago and I didn't realize it. Either that, or some kind of strange "filter" on the mouse was set to make it less sensitive. Either way, I just have no idea how to change the acceleration.

Yeah, tried a couple brands, and I have about 5 of my own mouse as backups. I'm now trying to figure out a way to change the acceleration at a low level, so that even dos games must respond to it.

MiCLuS--I am confused. Are you saying that no combination of different mouses and PCs works properly anymore?
    Spyware?
    You might try

Right, no combination of computer or mouse. I'm saying something must have changed the mouse somehow from what it normally is. The acceleration or something. I think what it is now and on other computers might be what it normally should be, but I'm trying to get it back to what it was before. Thanks for the link, but I'm sure it's not spyware or any type of virus. I'm pretty sure now it's something I'm going to have to do to slow the mouse down, rather than undo.
