    View Source

    Hiya gang.....long time no see.....

Got a problem which my research shows may be a known issue...but without a known fix...

    I can't view source code in IE 6 sp1(WinME)....

Here is what I tried so far:

    1. Emptied cache and TEMP folders.
    2. Reduced size of Cache limit.
    3. Searched registry for DWORD entry "noviewsource"...it's not there.
    4. Checked that Notepad is in windows folder and working. It is....

    You guys have any suggestions?

    Hi Max

Is this for all pages or just one particular one? I've seen something done to a page to stop the source being viewed, (not sure what it was, but other pages were OK).

If all pages, perhaps a repair of IE6 would be the way to go. BF

    Hi Big Fred

It's all pages.......no error message....notepad just refuses to open up...

OOPS...forgot to mention IE repair in my list of tried fixes. I did try that too......didn't help, though.

Try a overinstall them. Maybe something is corrupted and needs replaced.

    Try that.

    Hi Max

    BTW welcome back.

I see so it's not that source is greyed out, it's there but nothing happens when you click it?? If that's the case it's got me beat, sorry. Hope someone else has some ideas.

    Tried a virus scan? BF

Train.....are you talking overinstall of Explorer, notepad or.......god forbid....Windows?

BigFred.....the link is there and active....it just doesn't do anything. My travels have seen this crop up for others and emptying the cache usually does the trick. But for some...like me....it didn't work. I read another article that said this was a known issue, but MS seems to be ignoring it for some reason....

    Hmmmm...............

IE. Overinstalling the same version will fix things like that most of the time. Had two times where that did not work. And check for updates after doing the install.

Does the EDIT button in the toolbar work? I can read the source using notepad with it. Or a couple other programs I have installed.

Strangely enough....I never added the edit button to my toolbar. Once I did add it, it does work to bring up notepad.

The view source link is still dead, but I can use the edit button to get where I am going as a work-around. Thanks.

Hi, a while ago another member had a problem with view source, seems to me that MS are ignoring this one. You might find that changing view source will help, to do this download Xteq systems x setup, under internet explorer you can change view source editor. Also if you right click on the tweak from the drop down menu select information under code you can find the reg mod's for the change.Once you effect a change(to say wordpad) changing it back to notepad may fix the problem.

Yeah....MS is sitting on this one. Probably because most people have no need to look at source code unless they are web-builders.

I will try the wordpad change thingy later and see what happens....

I also found this solution which I also haven't tried and have no idea what it will do...LOL

    1. Close any instances of IE.

    2. Create this registry key if it does not already exist (chances are it does not exist):
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\View Source Editor\Editor Name]

    3. Modify the Default value of the "Editor Name" to the path of the program you want to use to view source code. For example, "C:\Program Files\Accessories\wordpad.exe" or "C:\Windows\notepad.exe"

Note: If the path contains blank spaces, please do not forget to add the quotation marks. Then when you click View>Source in Internet Explorer, the program you specified will open.

Hi that is just about what the code from Xteq references in the registry, could be the way to go.

thanks for the info, SuperSparks, from that website http://8help.osu.edu/2174.html
I found out that creating a shortcut to notepad, (which I did just before the "view source button failed") is the culprit. who would have thunk it. I deleted the notepad shortcut, on my desktop and view source came back.
