    Aargh! win32.pcast and no paging file!

    Hi guys. Been at least 2 years since I had need to visit. You helped sort out my last trojan that McAfee decided to let in and this time I'm hoping you can help me sort my ailing PC out before it gets thrown out of the window.

    I've got win32.pcast coming up as blocked in AOL AntiSpyware. I've loaded Windows Defender (latest), AdAware SE, ran numerous scans online and still getting this annoying Windows Installer coming up at least 4 times when I start up the PC.

    The worst of it is that the Paging File is now set to zero and I can't change it to the default windows settings. It's a right mess!

    If you guys can help me out I'd be extremely grateful. I've loaded HiJackThis so if you need to see the log I can post it. I'm hoping that the AOL continues working or I'm gonna be completely screwed.

    Kind regards

    Gareth

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Download CWShredder 2.19 from here and run it.[/b] Select the fix button & it will fix everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including Internet Explorer, before running CWShredder. Reboot.

    ===============

    Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...fo/bt_side.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://lookfor.cc?pin=96676

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    Confused........

    I did wghat you said to do above but the PC just died again and again. I'm at work now so can't send the hijack this log but I was intrigued.

    Is there any way I can get the Paging File and DVDR and DVDRW drives back without a complete re-build? I'll post the HiJackthis log later this afternoon for you.

    Another thing I was going to ask was whether you knew whether this win32.pcast virus/trojan is well known? McAfee seem to have no idea of it........

    Cheers

    Try running the shredder in safe mode and see how you go.
    If you have your XP CD you can try doing this;

    Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

    sfc /scannow

    The Windows File Protection service should immediately begin searching your PC for any corrupt or missing files and replace when necessary.
    Don't forget to pop your CD in first.
