    Resolved [RESOLVED] Really not sure what is going on, Help when you can

    Here is the story.

    Inexperienced user was browsing in email account (Gmail), saw the spam tab and started clicking around at the messages. Saw something written in Portuguese and didn’t know what it was, clicked on it and downloaded a file (used firefox so went straight to default folder), I looked around and believe it was a file called cartao.exe, just asked the user and he said he did open it).

    The computer was connected through a small home office network to a firewall router to get its internet connection. The computer soon became unresponsive in all aspects. I arrived on the seen about a day and a half later. I pulled out my cd with the utilities in the HJT forum on this site and was going to set to work in safe mode, but this error comes up:

    Explorer.exe application error

    The instruction at 0x1001889 referenced memory at 0x10018891. The memory could not be “read”.

    Then it just cycles back to the “You are going into safe mode” prompt when you press ok or cancel. Just cycles through and you can’t really get any program to run for long before it locks up. I did get a HJT log to work however. I ran Spybot, ad aware and ewido in a regular boot up but they didn’t catch anything. The computer became somewhat more responsive after that, but you cannot look at any windows settings or options and HJT automatically shuts down when you try to open it.

    Here is the HJT file I did manage to get:

    Thank you for your time and please let me know what other information you might need and what you think needs to be done.

    EDIT: Forgot to mention that the computer can no longer access the network thus no connection to the internet either. The rest of the computers on the network can't find each other either... that machine isn't the main machine or anything either, dunno why the whole network is acting funny, but the other computers can get on the internet through the network just not see each other.

    Can you please do the following.

    ===============

    Scan with HiJackThis, then check(tick) the following, if present:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [taskmgr.exe] C:\WINDOWS\app\taskmgr.exe

    Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

    ===============

    Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

    folders...

    C:\WINDOWS\app

    -

    Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

    -

    Reboot.

    ===============

    Download and run Winsockfix from here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/N...nSockFix.shtml

    ==

    After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

    That seemed to work well. The network still isn't working, but internet is...weird. I think it is because some tech guy came in and threw norton antivirus on there, I got a warning from a connection attempt when I reconnect the network cable, but the IP address was an internal address, norton claimed it was a trojan trying to get in. Anyways the computer is responding very well now thank you very much! What virus was that? Here is the new HJT report:
