Trying to play DVD with Media Player for the first time

    Using XP with Media Player.

Just purchased a computer with XP Media Player and trying to play a DVD movie for the first time. Loaded in DVD and get an error message:
Decoder Error. Video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please restart.
I restart and get the same error message. Do I have to do something special to view a movie on my computer?

You need the mpeg codecs. Try one of the codec packages at K Lite (download entire package and install).

    Starman:

Download the codecs, whatever they are, and the movie is now playing. Thanks much.

By the way, what the heck good is Media Player, if it did not already come with this feature?

I really don't know why MS does not provide the basic codecs (code/decode). Could be a warranty/responsibility/support issue.

A codec is something that takes some raw video or audio and converts it into a compressed form (such as an avi or mpeg or mp3). To play the video or audio it has to be decoded by a codec.
