A Final Solution...is there one for security?
My ISP (cable modem) has recommended I get this product: http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...prid=20&grid=5
What good will it do? I heard that anything can be hacked? Is it just another $130 in in squandered money?

Cindy, you are correct. No matter what you have for security, it can be hacked into. If it is a true hacker that wants in, he/she will get in. Most people on here swear by Zone alarm. I used it on my HP and it worked great. I would advise you to check into that before spending out the dough $$$$$ Just my opinion though.. In case you haven't heard of it, you can download it at www.zonelabs.com ANd the best part is it is freeeeee..

Cindy, it is a seesaw. One day you can be on top and the next the bad guys will. Just think of it as a part of maintenence, but as Dodge said, ther are free things you can do to minimize the chances. Here's another thing. Who would want to hack into one computer say of any of us. Just use a commonsense approach. Learn about it and you will feel better.

Protecting your computer is a long thing these days. I have Java, ActiveX and cookies disabled. I have a firewall (Atguard) but ZoneAlarm is a good free one. I block as many ads as possible and pop up windows.
I also have AVP and the Cleaner, I run NOScript to stop malicouis scripting via Outlook, of which the settings are on Secure.
Its a bad world out there. Just get a firewall to start with.

If you don't know what is out there, how can you protect yourself. Fear of the unknown and paranoia is an insidious enemy and causes one to lose sleep.

over here, the cable ISP would scream bloody murder if everyone installed a router.
see, they want us to pay per puter....
that is what this lynksys is good for.
yes, I am also on cable, and zone alarm seems to keep intrusion attempts out.

If what I heard was free advice, would I take it? Jaak
