End of Support for Windows XP SP1
If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 or a previous version of Windows XP, you should upgrade to Service Pack 2. Starting October 10, 2006, Microsoft will end assisted support and security updates for Service Pack 1 as part of the life-cycle policy for all Microsoft software. If you currently use Windows XP, Microsoft recommends the free upgrade to Service Pack 2 to continue receiving the latest security updates.
For more more information, please see the Lifecyle Support Service Packs.

And I'd like to add that there is no excuse for not getting SP2, there are no problems with it as long as it isn't installed on a machine infested with malware.

Ahh is this another oxymoron aka Microsoft Works.
If you haven't already got up to date with SP2 etc they are going to stop you from being able to get updates.
So after whatever date, I can see a lot of this:
User: Help I can't d/l any updates !
MS: What SP are you running ?
User: SP1
MS: You must install SP2
User: Ok, where do I get ?
MS: You can d/l it ?
User: No I can't.
MS: Why ?
User: Because I can't d/l any updates.
MS: That's because your on SP1 and must install SP2
User: Yes I know but how do I do that ?
MS: By d/l it.
User: But I can't d/l.
MS: That's because you're using SP1.
User: I think we're going round in circles here.
MS: Why ?
User: Becuase you keep telling me to d/l SP2.
MS: That's right.
User: But I can't.
MS: Why ?
User: You told me it's because I'm only on SP1 .
MS: That's right.
User: So how do I d/l SP2 if I'm being prevented from doing so because I'm only on SP1.
MS: By installing SP2.
User: HOW ?????????????????
MS: By d/l it.
User: Am I missing something here ?
MS: What don't you understand ?
User: Who's on first ?
MS: What ?
User: No, What's on second.
MS: What ?
User: Yes.
MS: Yes ?
User: No, What ?
MS: ......................

SP2 will be available to download for everyone, regardless of their current SP level. And it is available to order on CD for those on dial-up connections, etc.:

Hi:
It is $1.75 shipping and handling charge from mS for the CD.
It used to be free.
I cannot tell you how many of these CDs I ordered and sold on ebay!
Kevin
I read your e-mail
To err is human, but to really foul things up requires a computer.

SP2 is crap and you know it unless you have a prefectly built SP2 ready machine, between all the hardware/driver and software issues No...simpley no I refuse to deal with SP2 and I I will be useign SP1 up untill someone makes vista useable so thats for another 5 or so years, they should break SP2 down so so I can chose what to get from it,this move just sweeps pll into a more fickle OS.........
I'll admit soem feautres on SP2 are appaleing but over all I would simpley rahter not fool with the damn thing,it reminds me of ME in someways ><
I touble shooted SP2 on my comp back when I have cable net (currently mvoed into dailup hell rual aera) I remeber gettign a 1/3-1/2 reduction in my downlaoding speeds I was paying 50 a month Cable not not crippled net...and it was fun palying with soem driver issues...ok ok...ok rant ended...mabye ><
I'l take combatblity over stablity and stablity over securty any day.
I mean realy WTF is XP trying to prottect itself from older hardware? oy ><...ok rant ended this time *L*
I'll admit 1 last thing to.......noobies...just get SP2 and get down with it,its a good thign I only have half left after palying with windose over the years.

I've installed SP2 on counless machines and never had a single problem on one of them. It is not "crap" at all. It contains a huge number of bug fixes, and more importantly, security updates and as ar as I'm concerned people who wilfully refuse to install it deserve everything that they get.

thats great in all but I ahve had one to amny issues to fool with the damn thing, that aside noobs are better going SP2.
Altho I do have acoupel question about SP2 beifits I ahve noticed data courption and other oddiest, this would be becuse I blindly cling to SP1 right? *L* the drive is fine mind you,ran SP2 in feb to march or april it got wonky on me and I just formated and put SP1 back on.
BTW got ant recomendationsfor Anti virus programs? I have used norton,Kaversky,Panda,AVG,Trend Micro
Only the high end norton seems to do everyhting, panda and kaversyk seem even altho Kaversky is a smaller install,Trend micros PC cillin as bad as the name is (sounds like XXX generic software) it actualy finds alot of crpa and had builtin firewall been sueing it for almsot a year now I like it alot more than anyhtign I ahve tried yet,the only thign I dont like about it is if any exe or such is infected it wont always beable to remove whatever from it.
