How to transfer My Documents to a new computer

I am using XP and have two hard drives. The second hard drive is primarily a backup for My Documents. Periodically, sometimes daily, I will copy My Documents from the C drive to the backup drive. Obviously, if C ever died, I would still have all of my Word files on the backup hard drive.

I am now getting a new computer. How do I get My documents from my old computer to my new computer? Can I take the backup drive from the old computer and put it in my new machine and have it as a backup drive in the new machine? If not, again, how do I get My Documents from old computer to My Documents in the new computer?

Yes you can, just slave the backup drive to the new one and you will be able to cope the data over to the new drive.

You make it sound too easy. I was expecting all kinds of reasons why I could not use the old backup harddrive in the new computer. There must be a catch some place. The old computer uses Word 2000. The new computer will have Word 2003. The old computer is verrrry slowwww and the new computer is fast. The old computer has a black case and the new computer has a silver case.
There must be some reason why it will not proceed as smoothly as you suggest.

No reason for it not to work at all. Unless someone goofs big time.

The only other possible hangup, would be if the C:\ is in Fat32 and the 2000 is in ntsf.
But that can be convered to NTFS and that ends that problem.

Yes, it's actually as easy as it looks.
I believe that if you move to the same OS (i.e. XP to XP)you can backup the whole 'My Documents' folder - in case you have any other items apart from the docs that you'd like to keep - and copy it to the new one.If you only want to keep the docs, you don't have to backup the whole directory - only the necessary files.
It doesn't matter that you'll have a new version of Office.The new versions are compatible with the old ones.Vice-versa might work but i wouldn't recommend it anyway...
And definetly the colour of the case is irrelevant...
