    Hard Drive Accessing

As soon as my screen saver kicks in something begins accessing my hard drive. The hard drive makes so much noise it can be heard over the TV. It makes the same kind of noise as it does during defrag or virus scan. If I jiggle the mouse to disengage the screen saver, the noise stops. These are ordinary Windows screen savers. Steps I have taken so far are: clean all temp files, run clean up utility, defrag, chkdsk, disable indexing service, scan for viruses, trojans, spyware/adware. I find nothing unusual running in processes. I have made no recent additions or changes other than to install the latest MS updates. And "yes" I am legal. This is about to drive me crazy.

I also have a second hard drive containing only data. But since this accessing appears while screen saver is running I assume that it must be occurring on my C drive.

    Dell XPS Gen 4 Desktop
    Win XP Home SP2
    WD Raptor HD
    I GB RAM
    PII 3.4 GB

    Thanks for your help.

Might be worth it to post a HijackThis log and let one of our experts take a look?

I decided to ignore the screen saver and to use power setting to turn monitor off after 15 minutes. This makes no difference. The hard drive still rattles like crazy. This problem appears to be connected with periods of monitor inavtivity, not with a screen saver.

    Anybody have any ideas?

You could be running a process like defrag or tune-up application start in the background. Maybe it gets started on the process, then stops when it's not idle, and never gets a chance to finish.
I haven't used those features in windows in awhile, but someone should know how to turn them off if you want. Newer drives also have a feature where they make much less noise for a small performance hit.

I'm sure one of the experts can, so i've moved it to the HJT Forum for inspection.

It is likely the intel application accelerator (two threads). That is an app that runs on idle. Not a security threat. Also CTsvcCDA.EXE should be unnecessary in an XP environment.
