Editing AVI File

I have a large avi file (call it M01.dat) 641,000 KB in size which contains a long concert. I only want to keep the last 41,000 KB of it, and discard the rest. I just want to play this section on my computer (using WMP, for example), and not to produce any dvd or vcd out of it.

What software** do I need for this exercise, and how to use this software?

If you have windows XP then you can use Windows Movie Maker which is already on the computer..

You could try freeware Virtual Dub or VirtualDubMod . They are in the realm of geekdom but for the purposes of what you want to do won't be too bad. Not as user friendly as say WMM but will output as avi.

If you simply want to chop and still have the same format avi, open avi, select Video / Direct stream copy. Audio should be that by default but check Streams / Stream List / right-click on stream and Direct stream copy should be selected. Select in and out points with Home and End - the section will be highlighted, File / Save As, enter new name.

If you want to resize, change volume, tone, deinterlace then you have to get into the geeky stuff a bit.
