Vdr is easy but try with Gmail. I don't think they allow that.

    Critical update:

    A. Any update that's essential to the operation of your computer is considered a critical update, and is automatically selected for installation by Windows Update and by Automatic Updates. These critical updates are provided to help resolve known issues and to help protect your computer from known security vulnerabilities.
For the most part critical updates patch vulnerabilities that impact the health of the internet overall. If it's a localized threat, it's typically a different type of update.

I want to thank anyone in advance that can help me. I just bought a computer from a friend of mine and cleaned it up a bit. When I connected it to the internet I did an update and received this message.
This copy of Windows is not genuine.
You may be the victim of software counterfeiting

I have a genuine copy that I can install but I cannot seem to get it to work?
Now that this fake copy is in how do I go about reinstalling Windows XP?

    Any help would be appreciated....

    Thanks

Just put the CD in the CD-Rom drive, and choose the Clean Install option.

Another thing that you need to do right away before going on the net is get a firewall in place. XP's will work for incoming threats, but not for something trying to call home from your PC. Use it until you get all the priority updates installed, but then get a decent software firewall such as Zone Alarm installed then shut XP's off. If you go online nowadays with 'no' firewall, you can be infected in less than a minute!
    Stupid question? No such thing!

There is another option available to you instead of formatting.
You can buy a legal version of Windows XP (you mention that you have one but it can only be installed on one computer and it must be a retail version, not OEM), then call Microsoft and have them explain you how to change the serial number to make it a legal version.

Good point Usil, I keep forgetting about that. Here's a Knowledgebase articles that explains how to do it (it works for all keys, not just volume ones):
