DVD Rom or CD Rom?

Hi everyone,
I currently use a 48x CD-Rom to play games and load software. I'm considering replacing it with a DVD-Rom, since DVD's seem to be much more commom nowadays. My question is: will I notice any differance in access times, or any delays while playing CD games on a DVD-Rom? I notice some slowdown when loading games on my DVD burner, even though it is rated as 48x for reading CD's. Thanks in advance!

Using the following two drives here and don't really notice any difference when reading CDs:

Sony CD-RW CRX320E: 52x32x52x CD-RW / 16x DVD-ROM

Sony DVD-RW DW-D22A: 16x4x16x DVD+RW / 8x4x16x DVD-RW / 2.4x DVD+R DL / 48x24x48x CD-RW

Since you have the ability to play DVD's if needed why get another one? You're cd drive will become a paper weight.

I wanted to replace the CD-Rom because it has a rounded faceplate, and it won't let me close the front panel all the way in my new case. I also like having a second optical drive to dedicate for playback.

I would get a DVD-Rom since it plays both. However, I just bought a game called "The Temple Of Elemenatary Evil". It is the original copy but it will not play in either of my DVD-Burners. Not sure is it because of the DVD-Burners but I remember reading some where that burners cannot play some game. This is true because I had another game only played in my Sony DVD-ROM but will not play in my Sony DVD-Burner.

I tried all the patches but still did not work. I am waiting to test if this is really because of the burner when I put in a CD-ROM.

I always install 2 burners these day now that they are so cheap, there is very little extra cost involved and you get the maximum versatility possible.

I say a DVD-Rom at Wal-Mart the other day for $30. I remember when they used to cost a small fortune.

Re CD drive, I wonder if the apparent game slowdown using a dvd drive could be that the dvd drive is actually too fast. The game software is designed to expect a certain delay time in reading the disk and is put out of stride by the unexpected speed. Just a thought.

That makes sense about the DVD drive being too fast. Is it safe to assume that DVD software will become more common in the next few years?

Definitely - it is not uncommon now.

I would say so, DVDs aren't going away any time soon, even if Blu-Ray and/or HD-DVD take off (and that is by no means a certainty).
