hi,
i have noticed for some time now that the longer i keep firefox open, and often un-used, the memory it uses increases. now normally this isn't a problem as the memory it uses isn't that high. but if i do leave it on for several hours without using it then it can use as much memory as 700mb .anyone come across this before?

Yes, firefox does take up a lot of memory, I believe this is because it likes to cache the first 8 pages in the back button and the first 8 in the forward button, for quicker navigation. Check this site out to help reduce it: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Reducing_m...usage_(Firefox)
The biggest, consistent and fair complaint I see made against FF is the memory usage. (This said by a BIG FF luver. Me! )
That said, I don't leave mine on for super long periods of time, so I really have never had any issues related to memory. But it is a known, much discussed issue...

Are you having a laugh ?
When I follow that link I get this page which I guess will use less memory than a page with lots on it.
My Firefox memory usage is about 28Mb and stays in that region. That's higher than many other applications but it's not huge. Do you have any extensions that may be the cause of the problem?
well on normal usage FF takes up anything between 30mb and 70mb. like i said it's just when i leave it on for extended periods the memory usages just keeps going up for no apparent reason. i suppose you may have a point that it could be an extension causing it but i don't know how to find which one it is, if any. the extensions i have installed are;
FlashGot
Adblock
Tabbrowser Preferences
IE view
J2SE runtime Environment(Java) 5.0 update 6

To find if an extension is the problem, Tools / Extensions / right-click on extension / Disable. Try disabling one a day and see if it makes any difference (or just enable one a day). If the run up to 700Mb is fairly quick you could do it in an evening.
