    Help...Laptop

I need help please. I have a IMB Thinkpad 600E. It uses the track mouse, but this morning it is not working. I logged on in safe mode and can use the arrow keys but cannot get to where I need to go for the mouse.

At logon I got an error message that said system utility or some such and the mouse will not move. I use WINXP, IE with DSL. Any info is appreciated. Thanks for any help.

Are there any yellow splats ! in Device Manager under your pointing device?

You could just simply reinstall the driver after downloading it from Lenovo/IBM.

Hi thanks for the reply. I cannot get to the device manager due to the mouse not moving. If I can get there by the arrows I can reinstall. I am thinking I may have unchecked it in the start up yesterday by accident. Now not sure how I can recheck when I cannot get there.

Try attaching a ps/2 mouse or if available a USB. I would think a you at least have a PS/2 mouse port on that laptop. Most do.

If you don't have a PS/2 port but do have a working PS/2 mouse laying around, you might be able to use it with a USB adapter: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...0387&CatId=469

Ok, thanks for that idea. I did put another mouse on the laptop, does not work. The pointer is stuck in the middle of the desk top. I did get rid of the error message by using the arrow keys and got it to startup in normal mode using all normal startup items. It was in "selective startup" which I am not sure how it got there. How can I get to system restore to set it back to yesterday when it did work correctly if I cannot use a mouse? The arrow keys will not take me there. Thanks for the help. Oh yeah I also (before the mouse stopped working) kept getting the message "program not responding" each time I tried to close out of a program (ebay, yahoo etc)

You can use the arrow keys, tap the Windows key, this brings up Start, select All programs, then using the arrow keys navigate to Accesories, System Tools>System restore. Using a combination with the tab key you should be able to get the tab to switch from create a restore point to restore from a restore point.
You might have to use the function key to be able to use the Windows key. But this can be done.

I do not have a windows key on this laptop. I do have a function key, but nothing that will take me to the start key. I can get to safe mode and on the screen I got to for safe mode there was a line that said "last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked) I tried that and still no mouse. The point mouse does not work, I have hooked up 2 different ones to it and nothing. I am in safe mode and I can get the arrows to work on the desktop icons and I can get to my computer, and I can click on the c drive but once I get in there and click programs or whatever, it will not let be go back, so I have to sut it down and start all over. There are all kinds of other options on the safe mode screen, but have no idea what they are for.

It is strange that everything worked fine at log off last night and then this morning nothing. I went to the IBM site for help and to download drivers for the mouse, it only lets me download to my desk computer, no way to save them to a cd to install on the laptop. I did get to system restore a bit ago, but after I told it to restore, it will not let me get any further due to the arrow keys not working. I tried clicking on N for next and nothing. I am frustrated with it and have no clue. I do appreciate your help tho.

You may have to try a repair of xp now. This you can do without a mouse, using the tab key and arrow keys. Or a chkdsk /r at the after inserting the xp cd in your drive, making sure the cd rom is set to boot first, then at the first screen of options, press the R key. After that, at the next window chose 1 hit the enter key, if it asks for a password, just hit the enter key again. The at the prompt C: type chkdsk /r Note the space between the k and the /. And hit the enter key again. This might fix the problem but if it doesn't you have to use the instructions in the link below.

Ok, got it working. Went back and forth in safe mode and got to system restore, still could only get so far with the arrow keys. I took a mouse off the desktop computer(we use 2 different ones because I do not like the track ball ones) and hooked it up int he USB port on the laptop. It recognized the hardware, the other two I had tried to use did not get recognized (??) and way I was able to get this one to work and I set the system back to last Sunday when I knew for sure I had not installed anything. Then I rebooted and it works fine, track mouse and all. I had installed the thinkpad configuration program for automatic updates from IBM either yesterday or Friday and I guess maybe it conflicted with it somehow. That is the only thing I can figure. It worked fine last night and then this morning, nothing. So that will not be reinstalled at all.

Thanks so much for your help/advice. I always know if I have a problem I can come here for advice!!

Glad to hear you got it working. Updates can do a whole lot of messing up a computer, given the chance. I usually read what they are for before installing any update.
