Angry New Drive same old problem

As we tune into Virtual DR, we find senseigreen in his lair, the Fortress of Frustration. He is trying to resurect an older model Micron PC (700 Mhz, 129 Mb RAM) by inserting a new 120G HD and reinstalling Win ME as was on there before the thing was crashing repeatedly. With the previous 20G HD, WinME/ Explorer would freeze or the screen would "wig out" by pixelating the entire screen and not responding to anything. All he could do was unplug and retry.

He tried to install IE 6 to "improve", logged onto pcpitstop.com and tried to analyze the potential probems, but the software would not download.

Your job should you accept, is to tell him :
A- has this happened to you?
and B-if anything CAN be done.

He shines his assistance signal into the sky and ......(your cue to drop the dime!)

May want to check to see if that mobo even supports large (120 GB) HDD sizes.
    Cheers.

It is running OK with that large a drive, however it has "wigged out" when I have been operating IE 6. It has restarted IE and sent an error message repeatedly, but (in their wisdom) Microsoft has not shared with me what the smurf I could do about the problem.

Of course Netscape runs fine and I have had no problem (no wig out) since last night when I posted. So gee folks, do you think there's a bug in IE 6? Any hands? Oh yeah, I thought so .....

Again, this is the same thing it was doing BEFORE I changed to the new HD.

In a way it sounds like you installed a program after installing 6 that replaced something with a older version.
Might try overinstalling IE6 again. Have had that to work. Plus be sure to get the updates for it.

    1. Repair Internet Explorer

You may be able to start the Internet Explorer Repair tool from a command prompt. To do so, click Start | Run, type (or copy & paste):
      Code:
      rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
      and press [Enter].

Note: This command is case sensitive.

    2. Check for damaged system files

System File Checker checks for damaged or replaced system files, and then prompts you to replace any files that do not match the originals. To start System File Checker, click Start | Run, type (or copy & paste):
      Code:
      sfc /scannow
      and press [Enter].

Note: When running SFC, updated or patched files that were installed may be overwritten by previous versions of those files. To resolve this issue, be sure and reinstall all hotfixes and security updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

If you're still having problems with Internet Explorer, then:

    3. Download Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1

      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
      Overview
Internet Explorer 6 SP1, the latest version of Internet Explorer for users not running Windows XP, provides a flexible and reliable browsing experience with enhanced Web privacy features for all Windows users. This version includes a full installation of the Web browser and the most recent version of Outlook Express, the e-mail client that is included with Internet Explorer.
Be sure and reinstall all hotfixes and security updates after doing this step too: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Red face Stable so FAR .....

Spy Doc, thanks! I ran the IE6 repair in RUN as suggested and it is stable so far. (I cxn do the same at school also for a couple persnickity CPUs) However, I could not get sfc to go. It restarted IE6 once and another error message was sent.

I went back to try the pcpitstop and the same message came up as before that their tools did not download. (Wah!) A whole list of possible conflicts and settings, so ................................

I'll be fiddling some more later, but it SEEMS OK (now) I will enjoy some bit of the day I have left. I'll post again if need be.

That is not unusual. Besides, I take what they say with a huge grain of Salt.

So if things are working right, I suggest staying away from there.

    No BAD news so far

OK, so here I am again. I have had the CPU on since my last post and next to nothing bad at this point. I tried the OEM Microsoft Works and it gave me a hiccup, bluescreen and came back operational when I tried it again.

I MAY try the old drive and try the IE6 repair on that so it is not totally lost. Most of the hard drives at the school are 2 to 4G in size, so it would be a shame to lose ONE 20G which could ghost most of their content!

My one saving sanity is that someone else will be in cahrge of these next year
