Sony VAIO desktop wrong CPU speed???
This is the desktop model PCV-RZ22G 2.4ghz P4 512 megs ram XP Home ED Sony DVD burner and ASUS cd-rom. The bios shows this cpu running at 1800mhz and no way to change it. If I right click on "my computer," Windows indicates that it is a 2.4 MHZ Pentium 4 but shows actual speed as 1.80mhz, which matches the bios setting. I thought Intel Cpus ran at actual speed, whereas the AMD cpus use an equivalent speed rating and actually run slower than that. Any Sony experts out there?

From what I've heard, many popular PC company's out there slow down the clock speed of the proc. (Maybe for it to last longer? Not sure.)
Also, many of them lock the ability to overclock, and if you found away around this, it would most likely (if you still have one) void the warranty.
SPECS:
Motherboard - ASUS A8N5X ATX
Memory - Crucial Ballistix Tracer
PSU - Antec TRUEPOWERII 550w.
Processor - AMD Athlon 64 3700+
HDD - Seagate 250 Gig. 7200.8.
Video Card - XFX 7900GT (Extreme Edition... Yum)

Download and install EVEREST Home Edition and see what it says about your system.

It says Intel Pentium 4 1800 MHZ (18 x 100)
Must be the bus speed set way too low. How to change it? The system requires PC2700 memory so bus speed should be 333?

The frequency should be changed to 166fsb. If it says 133 it's wrong.

David, here is a link to the main manual if you don't have it. It shows there is no way to change your fsb. So actually, the processor is locked in a way so as you can't change it.

Select the wording "System Reference Manual" to the left you download it to your computer.

Only thing you can really do is go into the BIOS and look for "Load optimal defaults" or similar command; if that's there, activate it then exit saving changes. 1.4GHz sounds like a fail-safe default.

With a multiplier of 18, it would appear that you have a Northwood cored 2.4G. The correct FSB is 133MHz, and your FSB is set to 100MHz, which is a massive undeclock. I find it very hard to belive that there is no way of changing it, but some makers like to hide some of the BIOS Settings. The problem is finding out how to access them - try pressing the F keys (except F10) while in the BIOS and see if it brings up the hiden bits.

Nick check the link I posted for the manual. It does not give a way to change anything.

Not being able to view the bios myself, but maybe able to change the
CPU Speed [1500MHz]* as shown in the Advance screen, to the correct number.

I can't get the manual, clicking the link doesn't do anything for me. But whether the manual tells how to do it or not, I simply find it inconceivable that they would ship a computer with the incorrect FSB setting and no way to change it - I feel sure that there will be a hidden setting somewhere. If they did then I think David should get a refund on it.
Nick.
