    5.1 Speaker system: need help!

hi, my current 4.1 speaker system stopped working (it was a cheap one from a computer fair, had it about 4 years).

so i purchased another 5.1 set today (made by Tevion, 50W RMS).

i have plugged everything in, led comes on the subwoofer, but no sound.

i went in to Creative software on my pc to do the "5.1 test" where a woman says the name of each speaker, but no sound.

    any ideas?

Lets try the obvious first, click on the speaker icon down by the clock, make sure that the mute box is not checked. Sidewinder

Next, right click on my computer icon, click properties, hardware tab, device manager tab, sound & video game controllers, are there any yellow marks next to the sound devices? Sidewinder

Well the only other thing that comes to mind is that the speakers are not connected properly, most often no sound is attributed to the things already mentioned. Maybe someone else has some ideas. Sidewinder

Is there any chance that you could plug the speakers into a different PC? It really is the easiest way of identifying whether the problems is with the sound card or the speaker/cables.

Look in the control panel for an applet like Audio HQ or similar this will enable you to set the system up as 5.1 rather than 4.1.Doing this will change the way you plug the speakers in but there is usually an image explainging the connections.

just found a set of normal pc speakers in my attic and tried it out on my sound card with the AudioHQ software.

all three 3.5mm jack submit sound.

looks like faulty speakers! damn! pretty cheap they were only paid £25!

well, you get what you pay for - i'm gonna go down PC World they got a philips 5.1 system with 80W RMS for £40.00!
