    Ethernet connection problems

    hi,
not sure which place this thread best belongs but i think this might be the right place. i not so long ago got a new motherboard, Asus P5WD2 Premium, with "Dual Gigabit LAN'. now i'm not that 'posh' and just use on of the ports of the internet. only problem is it seems to have a strange tendency to loose connection every so often. it is normally fine when just surfing the internet and even playing online games but when i download anything it has a habit of going. all i do is 'disable’ the LAN in networking settings and then 'Enable' straight after and that does the job for another 30-60 min. i have used the computer on a University network with internet through 10MB LAN at home with a ADSL router and it happens with both. so any idea's as to whets the problem and how to solve it.

    P.S. here's a little more info about the board;

    "Dual Gigabit LAN
The integrated dual Gigabit LAN design allows a PC to serve as a network gateway for managing traffic between two separate networks. This capability ensures rapid transfer of data from WAN to LAN without any added arbitration or latency. No more bottleneck to handle large amounts of data such as video, audio, and voice.

Special features of Intel Gb LAN
    - High-performing, PCI Express-based 10/100/1000 Ethernet connection
    - Simple installation and maintenance with Intel® SingleDriver technology and support DMiX"

I have the same motherboard in a server, with no problems.

Question: Is your PC obtaining an IP address from a DHCP server, or do you have a static IP assigned to it?

I have yet to find a DHCP server, either hardware or software, that does not have problems from time to time.

beyond my knowledge I’m afraid to say. all i know is that i have standard UK ADSL at home that previously worked fine with all the other computers on it, including my old mobo. also at university the connection never went with previous mobo and the internet is set up through a cache server. and it's not just the internet that goes but the LAN as well.

when you lose the LAN or Internet connections, use the following command to send the IP configuration data to a text file. That file can then be posted here for analysis.

    ipconfig /all > IpData.txt

Open My Computer, double-click the C drive and it should be there.

You can do a search for the Ipdata.txt file or look in C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name here)

    Try these instructions:

    1. Click Start - Run - "cmd" (without quotes) in the Open box and press ENTER.
    2. Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" (without quotations) into the command window
    3. Open c:\ipconfig.txt in notepad.

I have a question. I know this was from a while ago, but does your motherboard have 2 phyical LAN ports in it? If so does this issue happen with either one?
