    Windows Media Player

    Hi,
I had Windows Media Player 9 working just fine on Win XP Pro. Accepted the pop up for the upgrade to WMP 10. Decided that wanted to go back to WMP 9 and gave system restore for this. It's been a mess since.
Cannot find the player . Tryed to download the version 9 from microsoft but a messegue come about when installing: " This version of Windows Media Technologies is incompatible with this version of windows" .
This also happened when trying to install WMP 10 again. Tried to unistall but can;t find it in Add or Remove programs in Control Panel.
Please help. Would going back ondoing all restores help?
    Thanks

To find WMP 10 in add/remove software you have to select "show updates" at the top of the window.

    Windows Media Player

I'm afraid I did, but it does not show any WMP icon that I can identify.

GRRRRR, I had the same problem -- wanted to delete WMP 10 and reinstall WMP 9 -- and Windows won't let me do it!!
    ====================
I went to Control Panel and into the Install/Remove app, and checked "Show Updates". It showed WMP 10, for which I clicked the REMOVE button. After a few seconds of appearing to be working OK, the INSTALL WINDOW for WMP 9 shows up and again I get the SAME message (paraphrased), "A more recent version/installation of this application has been installed. Please uninstall this version and try again."
    --------------------------
*** I have also gotten the message "Cannot Delete Windows Media Player: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." This makes no sense, as it gives that message when there is absolutely nothing else running, not to mention WMP itself (verified in Task Manager).
    --------------------------
I have gone directly to the folder path "Windows Media Player" and tried (a) Deleting the main folder of that title, and (b) deleting the files in the folder, both as a group and then one-by-one. Each attempt results in what appears to be a complete deletion, but NO MATTER WHAT, everything magically pops back into view!! It's like Micro$oft doesn't WANT me reverting to an older version.
    --------------------------
C'MON, MICROSH*T!! All I want to do is ditch your latest version of WMP and reinstall my beloved Version 9!!
Remember, I tried uninstalling in Control Panel, and it doesn't work!! For some perverse reason, it brings up the WMP 9 install window!! Auuuughghghhh !!! Can someone please help?

    Have a look here...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...layer/faq.aspx

and see if any of the suggestions help.

Don't try to manually delete any of it's folders or files. They're regarded as system files by Windows and won't allow themselves to be deleted. That's actually a good thing because if you did manage to get them deleted you'd be creating quite a few problems since there are a number of other files, programs and registry entries that would be negatively effected if WMP suddenly dissappeared.

while you are all on this subject, can someone help me how to get windows media player 8 back?

    here's my story

i installed windows media player 10 like a long time ago...about a week ago, i found that i can't play media content on the browser anymore as the browser closes itself whenever there's media content in it

i went back to windows media player 8 and everything worked fine again, but until i installed windows media player 9 to see if it works....it doesn't work right after i' ve installed windows media player 9, but now i can't go back to version 8 because i can't find it in the add/remove place

i've already checked for virus and spyware
it'd be great if the problem to the browser is solved, but just going back to version 8 is fine too

    can someone please help?

Getting back to 8 is difficult. Have a look at the sticky at the top of this forum for some things to try.
