    Resolved [RESOLVED] Crucial or KingstonValueRam?

    I'm ready to whip out my credit card and give Newegg some business but I want to know if you have any specific reasons why I should get one or the other. My m/b will be Abit NV8 754, with the Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 754. Memory will be DDR 400 (PC3200). It seems to be a toss-up from what I can gather from other threads but if there is anything that I have overlooked or don't know...does one o/c better ( if I ever wanted to try),...etc...?? Oh yea...will be 1 GB. stick to start .

    Well I can't knock Kingston, because I've never used it. But I will say that I've used Crucial for years without a single problem, and I've had some very good overclocks out of it. I'd never hesitate in recommending Crucial to anyone.

    Crucial doesn't list a memory mod. for your motherboard. You can check here;
    http://www.crucial.com/index.asp

    Kingston lists some here;

    jmtjet...you're right.!! I had seen that but then I went to the Abit web site and there it has a list of companies and Crucial is listed...and somehow I got confused ( who, ME???)...and didn't see that the link from there takes you to the same site that you gave me..."..Monday, Monday, can't trust that day." !!! Thanks for catching that !! Interesting that the NV8 m/b doesn't use Crucial...seems to be the only Abit m/b that is that way...curious! Okay...Kingston it is...thanks again..saved me a lot of frustration !!

    I used to work for an OEM computer manufacturer that used nothing but Kingston Value RAM. From my experience, the failure rate was about 0.5% for what we used. When we did have problems with Kingston RAM, it had a LIFETIME warranty; Kingston always sent us a brand new stick of RAM to replace the bad stick. Recently, Kingston has started paying shipping both ways too!

    If I may just add my 3½ ¢ worth of comments:

    a) I have used both Crucial and Kingston, almost exclusively, in many builds (some o/c) - never an issue with either brand.

    b) Crucial may not be listed for this ABit board if they haven't tested it yet.

    c) If you are going to put in 1MB (1 stick), I believe you can get better performance with 2x 512MB. Maybe someone else can add to this comment?

    Cheers

    The only reason 2 x 512mb sticks would help is if it was in dual channel, and if you put the 2 sticks in the dual channel slots, otherwise a 1gb stick would be better for upgradeability.

    Hey ya'll...My Abit NV8 does not support dual channel...and since Crucial is not listed for this m/b ( curious!), and since this board only has two Dimm slots...I went with 1GB of Kingston...leaving me room to add another 1GB if I want/need. There is some interesting discussion going on about how much ram is "needed/utilized/wasted"...it's a good and relevant topic that should make for some good reading.
