Greyed out box in NAV - is this a problem?
Windows Defender showed MyDoom on my system. Clicking "Remove" showed "Fail". NAV (part of SystemWorks 2004) didn't catch MyDoom. I ran the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool (Feb 2006 version). This said "No Infection". Defender then gave the all clear. Why didn't NAV pick this up? Is it this a false negative from Defender?
Checking the NAV Status Page shows: OK (all green ticks). But when I go to "Options\NAV\Other\Threat Categories\Virus Threats" the top box (Viruses, worms, trojans (scanned by default) and its tick are greyed out and can't be changed. Is this a problem?

Do a couple of online scans here..
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
and here..
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
for confirmation. The malicious sware removal tool only looks for a few specific viruses or worms so it wouldn't necessarily be the best scanner under the circumstances... sometimes even for the ones it's supposed to look for.
I haven't used NAV in a long time so I'm not sure about the checkmark being greyed out. Perhaps someone else here would have a better idea about that.

From 104456's comments it looks as tho I needn't worry about the greyed out box. Thanks, I'll rest easier! Perhaps it's not editable because it indicates what NAV is supposed to do, but it could have been a bit clearer. Anyway, thanks.
I tried the Trend & Panda virus checkers but couldn't get either to run. The Trend just sat there doing nothing and showing "idle" until I got sick of waiting.
The Panda wanted Internet Explorer (I use Firefox 1.5) so I tried with I.E and allowed pop-ups which it seems to need, but they closed immediately on opening. I looked carefully to see if I was missing something, but couldn't see anything.

I ran the MyDoom Removal Tool. It says it's not present. This solves the problem. Thanks for the help.
Just one question..... I have NAV Auto-Protect enabled as I should. I also have Defender set to automatic scanning, and real-time protection ON. Is it possible that Defender's report of MyDoom could have been cause by some sort of conflict between NAV and Defender? I've run them together assuming that one is a virus checker and the other is antispyware. Am I right in thinking this?

There shouldn't be any conflicts with them running together. Almost all of us here run a number of anti spy and a/v progs for complete protection (not two a/v's though... that sometimes causes problems unless one is set up for manual scans only).
Since you've now run quite a number of scans and none of them has found MyDoom then it's safe to assume it's a false positive. If there's a way to report that to Microsoft then do so and they may eventually fix it.

Just remember if the world didn't suck, we would all fall off it

Many thanks, the problem is resolved. I've already spoken to the Microsoft people locally. What they do about it I don't know. Incidentally, they were very helpful indeed which flys in the face of much that you hear/read about them. Credit where credit is due.
Thanks again. (Love your cat site)
