    Possible delay to Vista release?

Quality is to be the overriding factor. Here's an interview with Jim Allchin:

"We want to make sure we drive the quality up very high," he said. "When we do something like Windows that’s literally going to [have] hundreds of millions of users using it, we want to build the highest-quality piece of software we can within a reasonable time frame. But at a certain point we make a determination: is this good enough for hundreds of millions or not? And if you rush something like that, then you end up harming everyone - our partners, us, our customers, so it has to be top of line."

Dang it! I thought for sure that Redmond wouldn't come out with a "delay message" for at least another month.

Microsoft has hinted at the possibility of delaying Windows Vista if it does not meet quality expectations.
In other words, I'll bet the development team just found huge gaping holes in Vista's security. That, or the two or three Service Packs aren't ready yet...

    "Cynical"? Moi??

Oh, those service packs are ready. The problem is that they haven't come up with a good release schedule for them yet.
Executive 1 "Service pack 1 will be released in Autumn 2008. Service Pack 2 will be released in Summer 2010, Service pack 3, in Winter 2013."
Executive 2 "What do you mean Winter 2013? What'll happen to our revenues? This is preposterous! We can't release it in 2013, Mr. Gates will never let that happen."
Executive 3 "In light of this argument, we'll have to postpone the release of Vista until sometime in 2007. Lets tell consumers it is to be announced"
