Autocomplete won't clear!
Using XP SP-2 with IE 6, I've been trying for a couple of days to clear my "autocomplete" cache. I originally used CCleaner, and it LOOKED like it worked, but when I go back to IE the autocomplete info is still there.
If I go to Tools/Internet Options/Content to try to clear all these issues, IE just locks up and I have to abend it via Task Manager.
Any ideas?

Hi shiva42,
the only thing I can think of is for you to go to tools/Internet options/content/auto complete and uncheck all the boxes, then clear again, reboot, and see if they are gone.

Unless you know another way to get there, or something that routinely might cause this expected solution to fail, I've already tried this repeatedly and it fails, locking my machine up.

You might wanna try an IE repair if it's locking up, it may even help with the autocomplete problems.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP
From the Start menu, select Search, select All Files and Folders.
Select More Advanced Options and place a checkmark beside Search Hidden Files and Folders option.
Ensure that Search System Folders and Search Subfolders are also checked.
In the All or Part of the File Name box, type ie.inf
In the Look In drop-down menu, select C: or the letter of the hard drive that contains the Windows folder.
Click the Search button.
In the search results pane, find the ie.inf file located in Windows\Inf folder.
Right click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu.
Reboot the computer when the file copy process is complete.

Liam:
When I do that, it asks for my XP Pro Service Pack 2 media, which I'll have to locate, probably in a safe-deposit box somewhere... I'll post back after I can locate adequate resources to complete the process. Thanks for the advice so far...

liam858's suggestion for repairing IE is one of the two common ways. The other is Start|Run type sfc /scannow|OK.
But you will probably need your Windows CD for that as well, unless you have set your Source Path to C:\ (to access the I386 folder).
http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/howto-03.html
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_r...e_and_oe_6.htm
The latter article mentions how to set the Source Path, but I do not understand the G:\WXPCCP_EN part. If your I368 folder is in C:\ you set the Source Path to C:\ . All this assumes you have system files in I386.
Another way to set the Source Path.
Cut and paste the following script and save it as, set_source_i386.reg. Run this .reg file from anywhere on your system to install the following reg keys.
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
"SourcePath"="C:\\"
"ServicePackSourcePath"="C:\\"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion]
"SourcePath"="C:\\I386"
Of course back up your Registry before running this.

Regretfully, I haven't had time to find my media to try it yet...for some reason my current employer believes there are more important things for me to do. But, I hope to get back to it on Monday. Candidly, the behavior of my IE when I TRY to clear that cache makes me suspicious that there is probably something wrong beyond my current issue, so I may try to reinstall anyway. But I'm curious enough about this to try the repair to see how it behaves.
On that note, my original XP media I think was SP-1, and I've installed the SP-2 patches since then. Will trying to repair IE in the described manner necessitate my reinstalling the SP2 patches again? Or is there any way to tell prior to running the repair?
ok, gotta "light a shuck" as I'm fixin' to do some bid'ness

Hmm I once used that term in a converastion with someone who had pretty much just come out of Uni with HTML \ JAVA skills and they looked at me totally blankly.
I thought it was a common programming term, but I guess it was for Mainframe and now so much is PC based, us MF programmers are becoming dinosaurs, me at the tender age of ammost 39 !!!!!
