    Ironic

    FWIW....
    This is ironic.
When going to the ZD Net site "Spyware Confidential", in IE6, a cookie is placed on my pc. (com.com).
Now I have cookies in IE set to allow for session, prompt for other, and no third party cookies. The cookie they place is for '4years+', and no prompt comes up. So they bypass my settings, and this from a spyware info site???
In FFox, I have all cookies set for prompt, and there was no prompt, and no cookie was set.
I emailed Suzi Turner, who's blog I went to read at ZD Net, and can't wait for her answer.
    Will post it when received.
I don't think the 'cookie' is harmful, but it's really a matter of principal.
    It is MY computer.
Just another example of how users are 'put-upon'....

May have been from an ad? "com.com" belongs to cnet.com (I believe).

Went there twice, (in Firefox), after clearing all cookies, and don't see any new cookies (from blogs.zdnet.com or any other site).

    You are right about cnet.
I've been tracking my pc for weeks over this cookie and just today nailed where I got it from. Checked the ownership awhile back and googled 'com.com' and was blow away by how many sites there were......so I've been doing selective surfing to nail it down. I'm beginning to think that the simple user, like myself, will be fighting a long battle to keep privacy and malware nasties out of a pc. It has definitely curtailed my usage and enjoyment.
....another thing that is disheartening is that it bypassed the IE6 security for cookies?

What happens if you add "*.com.com" to your list of restricted sites?

    You're welcome.

(Note: Keep in mind that will also stop you from getting to any "*.com.com" site).

Yes, I understand, just a chance I'll take, since I don't hardly surf, except to what I consider/know/think are safe sites..

    Thanks again..
