    Hello MikeKea,

Looks like you've got the right idea. It's hard to know whether the connection is okay without knowing more details. That's all you need to do though is connect the desktop PC to the routers LAN port using a straight-through cable. I hope this answers your question. If not, then please reply with more details.

Thank you for quick response ecross. I"ve managed to convert the cross-over cable to straight-through cable meaning i had to change one end of the cable so that they are both equally measured. The problem occurs when i plug in one end of the cable in to a roter without the lamp switching on nor on the computer. Is there a way to test the cable?

    Thanx

    Mike

You can buy testers that check the connectivity from one end to the other, but for a one-off like this they're pretty expensive. You'd be better off borrowing a cable from one of your other machines -- if that fixes it, this cable is faulty.

If you're not used to crimping RJ45 jacks onto cables, it can be tricky to get right -- you need to make sure that all the wires go all the way to the end of the jack, but the twisting makes one or two tend to go in short.

Check out this site for how to make a patch cable. http://www.lanshack.com/make-cat5e.aspx

I would suggest that before you start cutting and crimping you purchase a cable tester, they're not all that expensive, Fluke makes some very nice ones. You'll need the tester to see if all then twisted pairs are in the correct order.

This is just if you REALLY want to learn how to do this. If you're just messing around the house just go to the store and buy the correct cable and save the hassle and aggervation.

I'll make up cable by hand for my Training room at work if I have to set up a smallish network of up to 24 PC's but in the server room I always buy my cables because I'm not going to take a chance with a cable I make up not being crimped strong enough and t failing one night when I'm not there.

anyway, if you want to do it yourself, get cable, RJ-45 connections, crimper (good Crimping tool) and a hand held tester and a garbage can. Don't cut those little ends and let them flip into the carpet, you'r wife will be squeaking at you in a day or so when she walks thourgh the cable ends.
    Good luck and have fun.

If she's managed to get out of the kitchen and onto the carpet . . . her chain's too long.

OH man you're in so much trouble now!

You're inviting the wrath O wives upon your head with statements like that. I have to cover the screen just so my wife doesn't see.

Wives have this inane ability to sense saying like this.

Infact, as I'm typing this, guess who walks in the room and asks, "Who are you writing too?"

You've been caught.. (Playing theme song to jaws) DA da da ddaadadadadada..

I told you they can sense this stuff.
She walked away while I was reading her what you wrote, she raises her brows and gets the furrowed brow look and say "EWwwwwwwwwww, he's in trouble now!

I'm sure she's sending out telepathic waves to the women of the world "Beware of spywaredr

Hrrrmmmp! In that case, here's a few more I'm sure she'll enjoy:
Q: Why do women have smaller feet than men?
A: So they can get closer to the sink.

    Q: Why don't women need a watch?
    A: Oven's have timers.

Q: Why do brides wear white dresses?
A: Don't all kitchen appliances come in white?
(Before you repeat these to her though, make sure she's chained up real good).

    Happy New Year!
