Cable problem

My network:

server> cable modem>netgear wireless router WTG 624.

laptop is connected with wireless card.

want to add the third desktop PC with straight-through cable between router and PC.

Is connection OK, and how to test cable

Looks like you've got the right idea. It's hard to know whether the connection is okay without knowing more details. That's all you need to do though is connect the desktop PC to the routers LAN port using a straight-through cable. I hope this answers your question. If not, then please reply with more details.

Thank you for quick response ecross. I"ve managed to convert the cross-over cable to straight-through cable meaning i had to change one end of the cable so that they are both equally measured. The problem occurs when i plug in one end of the cable in to a roter without the lamp switching on nor on the computer.Is there a way to test the cable?

You can buy testers that check the connectivity from one end to the other, but for a one-off like this they're pretty expensive. You'd be better off borrowing a cable from one of your other machines -- if that fixes it, this cable is faulty.

If you're not used to crimping RJ45 jacks onto cables, it can be tricky to get right -- you need to make sure that all the wires go all the way to the end of the jack, but the twisting makes one or two tend to go in short.

I would suggest that before you start cutting and crimping you purchase a cable tester, they're not all that expensive, Fluke makes some very nice ones. You'll need the tester to see if all then twisted pairs are in the correct order.

This is just if you REALLY want to learn how to do this. If you're just messing around the house just go to the store and buy the correct cable and save the hassle and aggervation.

I'll make up cable by hand for my Training room at work if I have to set up a smallish network of up to 24 PC's but in the server room I always buy my cables because I'm not going to take a chance with a cable I make up not being crimped strong enough and t failing one night when I'm not there.

anyway, if you want to do it yourself, get cable, RJ-45 connections, crimper (good Crimping tool) and a hand held tester and a garbage can. Don't cut those little ends and let them flip into the carpet, you'r wife will be squeaking at you in a day or so when she walks thourgh the cable ends.
