HP 3400C scanner problem with WinMe now
I have an issue with restore not working originally and posted here http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...8&page=4&pp=15 PAGE 3 but now have a bigger issue with my scanner all of a sudden not working.
See link above. The scanner works fine on my laptop with XP.
I have WinMe, 256mb ram, 6gb of hard drive space left. I've reloaded the CD software and tried starting with the outside buttons and throught the start/programs menu.
No errors, but when I do a ctrl/alt/del I see Hppsapp running.
If I do a ctrl/alt/del to reboot I see the scanner main screen pop up before the PC reboots.
Going to offload some files to CD incase I need more space for windows.

Does System Restore work or not???? - there's not point in your referring to SR here - and you gave not indication either way in your last response in the other thread. - if you don't know - then look here for a test for SR, and report back to the other thread.

WRT to your scanner - we need details of teh scanner make/model and the driver version - and the software you're using with the scanner.

I tried a restore to the last day it was working and many others and each restore is unsuccessful. WinMe has been great up to this point and I'll retire it soon since Microsoft updates will soon be over in 2006.
My scanner is HP Model 3400C
http://search.hp.com/query.html?char...3400C&oc=20506
I've uninstalled the program and installed the software from the HP install CD per instructions (while the scanner is not connected or powered up). I'm using the USB cable. All messages of the install say completed successfully.
I have used the install CD on my work laptop and the scanner works fine.
I have gone to msconfig and unchecked all the boxes and the scanner lights up but does not open the program. When you move the mouse it moves very very slow. No errors, but when I do a ctrl/alt/del I see Hppsapp running.
If I do a ctrl/alt/del to reboot I see the scanner main screen pop up before the PC reboots. I did have PCHealth scheduled task starting every 10 min which I thought was the problem.
I'll be going through this site tonight

It's got to be something dumb.

The only dumb thing that I can see here is that you are treying to fix two things at once - THAT WILL NOT WORK!!!!! - you need to fix System Restore before anything else - that way you may be able to retain some of your system settings!!
Boot to DOS, using your Startup Disk (if you don't have one and can't make one from Start | Add/Remove Programs, then download a diskmaker from www.bootdisk.com, and create the floppy by running the file)
At the A:\> prompt, type the following commands (followed by [return])
ATTRIB -S -R -H C:\_RESTORE
REN C:\_RESTORE OLDREST
When the A:\> prompt returns, remove the floppy, and reboot the PC. The Control Files will be rebuilt, and a Restore point should be created.
Then delete the C:\OLDREST folder, and reboot again.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder
I'm STILL not convinced that you correctly installed the hotfix - please check as per my original instructions.....
It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without which any current restore points are just space fillers.
To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the file, and select Properties.
What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem
if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch.
To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download the patch for offline install
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q290700
Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time, clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and creating a single new one.
You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office.
YOU MUST INSTALL that hotfix - not just copy the SMGR file across from wherever it currently is!!

- But did you INSTALL it, or just copy it in? I suggest that you do t the proper way this time, and download and and install the patch - then look at the C:|_Restore folder and see how much room it is using on the C: drive - post back with details.
If YOU (or Norton) don'[t screw with it, System Restore is one of the greatest advantages that Win ME and XP have over previous operating systems.

Now you got me all flustered. I thought there was more I was waiting for from you so I tried the scanner after supper and it works. Thanks so much Noel!!
So what fixed it and where was the problem?
Do I need to check mark PCHealth in msconfig? Will my system create a system checkpoint by itself? Do I need to add anything in the auto scheduler?

Since that apparently cleared the problem, I can make an educated guess as to wht the problem with the scanner was - and what the cause of that problem was.
Have you ever run Norton software on that machine?? - If so, then LiveUpdate probably corrupted the System Restore archive. That beig the case, it may be that for some reason, the scanner drivers or software alter one of the files that SYstem File Protection (and hence System Restore) monitors, every time it's invoked. Eventually, the backups that System Restore created filled up the allocated space, or simply grew too numerous, and when the next file came to be put into the archive, the psace was full and the program hung.
Let me know about Norton?

No - it removed the system protection from the folder, and then renamed it so that a new one could be created on the reboot to Windows.
You *should* then have deleted the OLDREST folder from Windows - did you?
I'm not aware of any problems induced by InoculateIt (but that's not unusual!) - so your problems then may not be related, ot it may be related to something else on your system. (as I said, this problem is commonly caused By Norton LiveUpdate - but by no means exclusively).

Fwiw I have actually disabled SR in my my machine and still had all the issues with running the HP3300C scanner so it wasn't SR causing it in my case.

I have a HP4200c and a HP 3500c scanner and have nothing but trouble with both of them.
Go to the HP website and "maybe" there is some help there. I think HP can make the hardware part OK it is that they do not know how to write the software to make it work. My next scanner will not be a HP.
