MS Config-Start Up Problem

My Daughter in-law has WD XP and IE 6. I am posting this problem for my daughter in-law because she no longer has the Internet and can't post. She also lives 200 miles from me, so I can't do anything about her problem until I go for another visit.
My daughter in-law has 4 teenagers, and when she had the Internet, they were always downloading and installing things off the Internet that they shouldn't have. Now her Start-Up menu is full of things that should not start up. I am not very familiar with XP as I use WD 98 SE but figured that the Start Up menu should work the same way in both Windows using MS Config. But every time I try and take things off her Start up menu, and reboot the computer, as soon as Windows comes up, a screen comes up asking to change back everything to the way it was before I unchecked those items. We have just been clicking the X at the top of the screen, but this is very aggrivating and you should be able to take off anything on the Start up menu that you want to. How do I take things off her Start up menu without having to deal with this error screen every time we turn on her computer?

The usual Windows message box that appears when you have used MSCONFIG to select startup items has a check box to not show the message again and to not run MSCONFIG at startup. If that is the box that is appearing, just select the check box and you should be OK.

It's very aggrivating indeed.
You can use this script to open MSConfig.
It will open msconfig, after you close msconfig it will delete the registry key responsible for showing msconfig after reboot, so no more aggrivation

Rename MSConfigNoStartup.txt to MSConfigNoStartup.vbs.

XOR: I am not very computer literate, and am not sure what to do with this script Do I type this into the box where I normally type msconfig? And where do I "Rename MSConfigNoStartup.txt to MSConfigNoStartup.vbs."? I am sorry that I don't know enough to know how to do all these things.

Click on the link and choose Save To disk.

Once saved single click on the .txt file on you hard drive press F2 and change the suffix to .vbs from .txt and press enter answering yes or ok to any questions asked about renaming the file.

Then double click on the .vbs file which is a VB script file.

Nix: Remember this is for my daughter in-law's computer, 200 miles away from here. So do I save the attachment to a floopy and take it with me to her house the next time I go to visit and then use your instructions to fix her computer?

Nix: The reason I was posting this problem for my daughter in-law, is because as stated in my first post, " I am posting this problem for my daughter in-law because she no longer has the Internet and can't post", so I can't email her anything. They live in a very small community and the only Internet Service or telephone service they can get is from one independent phone company. No one else can get into the area. That was bad enough, but every phone call made from her community, is a long distant phone call. Her phone bill was over $500 a month, so she finally got rid of the land line phone service and went to cell phone. That meant with no land line phone service, no Internet Service. So now I am having to post her problems with her computer using my Internet service since she no longer has access to Internet. That is why I was wondering if I could put the attachment on a floppy & take it with me the next time I visit there?

When that message appears just checkmark the small box "Do not show me this again" and click OK and you won't see that message again until you make another change in the Startup menu then do the same "checkmark the small box "Do not show me this again" and click OK".

Sheila, you can save it to floppy. I missed the part as well that your daughter in-law had no connection.
But it's not a big deal, it will only save you two mouseclicks after reboot.
Msconfig will not show up and save you the agrivation. (or is it aggrivation)
When msconfig comes up after reboot, you can check "Do not show me this again" and click OK. It will do the same.

Startup items should NOT be removed using the msconfig option in XP.
Black Viper's site is down at this time,but Major Geeks is representing a portion of what his site says. Have a read here about using XP's services to disable unwanted/uneeded services...

Nix: I appreciated your input and was not trying to be sarcastic about telling you about my daughter in-law having no Internet Connection--just thought that maybe you had forgotten in your enthusiasm to help out.

Ridgerunr: That was an interesting article and kind of confusing to someone who does not have Windows XP- but makes sense in a way because I always wondered why MS would have a error window to come up for Windows XP whenever you took something off the start up menu--when this was not a problem with any of the previous operating systems. I had always thought that Windows XP was suppose to be a big improvement over all the previous Windows and this did not seem the case with Windows XP start up menu. I wonder how many people who use Windows XP had the knowledge that is listed on the site that you provided? No one I know who has WD XP has ever mentioned this before, so it makes me think it is not common knowledge. Thanks for the info. I will print it all out and take it with me to Swainsboro in about 2 weeks when I go to visit.
