System Restore slowing down

Just for fun I loaded the install CD on my laptop with Win XP and the scanner works, so the scanner is ok. It's the dumb ass Win Me that has a problem.

I'll wait to see what you guys have to say.

Copo, when we got our system we got a scanner because my wife was convinced we'd use it for scanning photos.

Needless to say within months, digital cameras took off in a a big way and the scanner became a very big paper weight.

Finally put it away in a cupboard when my second son was born which is almost 2 years ago now.

I've even uninstalled all the software and drivers for it.

It is an HP 3300c connected via USB and was nothing but trouble from the start.

The software that came with it didn't work properly, freezing on installation when following the instructions given.

Followed different intsructions on the HP website and got it workling, but only when there was a CD in the CD drive ??

Managed to resolve that issue somehow and found that if you hit the scan button on the the scanner it would start up the scanning software and then just freeze and you'd have to restart the machine, whereas if you started up the scan software and hit the scan button within the software it would work.

If you then let the lamp in the scanner go off (after 10 minutes or so) it would not start up again if you hit scan anywhere, you had to restart the machine and power off / on the scanner.

I never tried it in anything but WinMe but maybe I should try it in Win98SE or Win2000 just for laughs.

I always thought it was the crappy HP software or scanner, didn't even consider it could have been WinMe.....silly me.

OK - I suspect the scheduled task you removed was PCHealth Data Collection??
If so, then you also need to make sure that the accompanying entry in the MSCONFIG|Startup list (PCHealth - Winmgmt.exe) is also UNchecked at all times - or it will regenerate the TS entry at the next boot.
However - it's extremely unlikely that this is the cause of your problems with the scanner (although it's a good idea to disable it, as it serves no useful prupose whatever)..
I really think that you need to start from scratch on this , in a new thread.

Describe your problems (not the methods you've used - unless you also give details of the results of those methods in terms of changes to the error messsages, or whatever).
We need details of your scanner - make/model, and the version number of the drivers, and the software you're using for it.

After you've uninstalled the software, reboot to Safe Mode, and check in Device Manager - make sure that there are no traces of the scanner hardware/drivers in there, and then reboot to normal mode, after UNPLUGGING the scanner - then follow the manufacturer's instructions on installing the hardware and software. In many cases, the software must be installed BEFORE the hardware!

Again - please start a new thread, because this problem hasnothing whatever to do with the current thread title.

I apologize for bringing this thread back to life but had been having the same trouble in regards to SR on my WinME system. It's odd that a few of us started experiencing this all around the same time but I know that's merely coincidental.

I'm taking the advice laid out here as it seems to have worked for the others. I've been trying to think of what it was that changed at the start of this that kept SR from setting restore points more often than about once a month. I'd rather not strain my brain for that long but it was probably about the time I began using Avast or a new desktop display.

I'm a stickler when it comes to my Startup items (04's in HJT). Before using Avast, it was 5 items. Now it's 7 items. I am almost positive the issue is with the Avast so I'm going to disable that and let the system idle for 15 minutes and see what happens. I also have broadband but have had that a long time and it didn't prevent restore points before so I'm thinking it is just Avast. I don't use a firewall - hate them, don't believe in them for my personal use - so it's not that. I always check MSCONFIG to be sure nothing else is running with the 7 required (in my opinion, required) items running. Knowing HJT very well, I run a new log and check it weekly - because, unfortunately, I am not the only one on my machine, .

I'm sorry I didn't see this before and posted my problem. If the Mods wish, they can feel free to remove it altogether.

Coincidence?? possibly - Norton??? probably! <g> - before you installed Avast!, what was your AV??

a few more details wouldn'tr go amiss, either.....
What 7 items are in your startup list - and what has been disabled in MSCONFIG, rahter than by the programs' own options menu????

There is absolutely NO point in running HJT logs unless they are to be analysed by experts (and I don't consider myself one!), or at least used for control of malware - they show nothing (under normal circumstances) of what's really happening in the system. They are intended for use ONLY after the system has been thoroughly disinfeted by normal means, and found to be still wanting <whatever>.
