    DSL Connection Problem

    Hi,
My DSL connection only stays on about 15 minutes or so and then it drops. My ISP says the problem is in my computer not their equipment but so far they can't help me with this.

It is connected via a USB cable to the modem and a line to the phone jack.
Windows ME. If I shut down or disconnect the power to the modem it will connect ok for a little while.

I would appreciate any ideas on how to fix this.
    Thanks.

Do you have a NIC that you could try connecting the modem to computer with?

    Is your modem over heating?
Modems can get really hot and once they get too hot they can get troublesome

I would make sure its well ventilated and clean from dust etc

Sorry, I don't know what a "NIC" is?

As for overheating, this is actually the second modem I've tried - both from my ISP and I'm having the same trouble I had with the first one.

    Thanks.

No, not near speakers - however, it was located fairly close to a heat register but I have since moved it and don't see any improvement yet.

    Thanks for the responses.

Thanks for that link, I can't see anything that applies here but maybe I'm overlooking something.

    Thanks.

NIC is a Network Interface Card. It looks similar to a dialup modem except it has an RJ45 plug, that is bigger than a phone jack.

Thanks, Photolady, maybe I'll mention that to my ISP when they call back today.
What I don't understand is that if it is "in my comptuer" as they say, why can I connect OK for about 15 minutes at a time.

    Thank you.

Thuis can also be due to a dirty line - have them talk you through adjusting the settings to limit bandwidth slightly.
To advise further, we'd really need to know
    1) your ISP
    2) what the nominal connection speed is
    3) what the make/model of modem is
    4) what sort of transfer speed rating you get from sites such as http://www.dslreports.com/stest - pick a test site that is near you, or one
recommended by your ISP for this purpose.

I have very limited time to respond but want to thank you for the suggestions. My ISP is monitoring the line for a few days.
    Thanks.

The problem must have been in the modem as a new one is working fine now.
    Thanks.
