    Does my DOS have alzheimers??

Probably not a biggie, but occasionally i like to run ScanDisk from DOS. The last couple of times i've used it, it displays the approximate run time as 20 minutes?
My "C" drive with OS(Win98fe) is my 20Gig hard drive with just one partition. And it actually takes 1 hour and 50 min. to run ScanDisk. The run time is the same, but why does DOS report the wrong time estimate? As i said, it's probably not a big deal, but has anyone else experienced this?

Yes griffin has a bad case of it. But we try to over look it.....lol

I have had the same problem before, but then it cleared up. So I never got to figure out what the problem was. When it did that it would take the normal amount of time, but just displayed it wrong.

    Does it work fine?

Dodge, yep,,it works fine and it "does" take the normal amount of time to run. This may or may not be related, but recently i couldn't get my PC to re-boot to DOS using the windows shut down menu. So, i used a "find files" for *.PIF and on the "close to DOS" folder changed it from auto to just "do" it.(don't remember the exact terminology), but it's been fine since then.
Guess i've just learned not to trust anything irregular when it comes to Windoze..

have you tried scandisk after loading
    C:\windows\smartdrv.exe ?
it may make a difference ?

if it does, one could have it load from dosstart.bat or from autoexec.bat (I make my boot floppies load it)

it's a tip I read here months ago, and it's worth remembering.

Jaak, no, i haven't tried loading smartdrv.exe. Have seen it mentioned, but haven't really paid much attention to it. Is it loaded from DOS? Or from Windoze? If from DOS, what exactly is the command line? Would like to give it a closer look.
Oh,ya', sorry it took so long to get back. Family stuff.
Dodge, got yer drift about Micro$oft a' long time ago. An' good ol' Billy Bob is a' whole nuther subject too!

if you copy the file onto a floppy it is easily loaded in autoexec.bat

if you wanna load it in DOS after booting to DOS from C:

    c:\windows\smartdrv

and since windows uses it own version of caching, it will tell you you should not load smartdrv in a shell.

    strictly DOS, this one...

Could this perhaps have anything to do with DOS only recognizing the first 2 G of the drive?

    herring,
the DOS in win98 will see huge drives if they was fdisked and formatted in FAT32 system.

win98 fdisk has an issue with drives bigger than 64.8 Giga, and one can download a better fdisk for drives bigger than that...

btw, I think you don't want to run scandisk without himem.sys loaded.

Thanks Jaak for the proper commands.
And, herring? Hard drive is 20Gig and has fat32 loaded properly, so don't think it's a recognition prob. And when ScanDisk runs it shows the proper amount of clusters. One thing i have been thinking might cause it? I'm only using about 2 1/2 Gigs on drive. So, i wonder if for some reason 'er other it may be giving the 20 min. run time 'cause of this? Beats me,,but all else seems ok,,so not goin' to lose sleep over it. Just keep my wary eyeball peeled for any related abnormalities i guess.

If you do have any problems with it, then try this scan disk to help sort it out.

    empowered scandisk
