Modem Not Found
Tried to sign in like usual & got a message that the modem was disconnected or in use by another program. I checked the phone line, I tried hooking a telephone to it & got dial tone. When I check Device Manager, it says there is no modem. I turned off the computer & opened it & made sure the modem was seated in its slot then closed it up & turned it on again. Still says no modem found on any port. Its a Dell Computer & its running Windows XP using a dial up connection. Any suggestions? Thanks -

When I saw this happen last, it was right after an electrical storm, and the modem was visibly damaged. You might also try a different PCI slot before throwing it away! Since they're only about $20 now, a replacement is a good option.

I tried a differernt modem in the same slot, but I didn't try the modem in a different slot. I'm not sure why, but I'll try it now. If that doesn't work, then ...I have no clue.

What brand of modem do you have? What model?
I've never had to install a modem 'by hand' in XP, but you might try that. You can use the add hardware wizard if the modem still isn't showing up in device manager. The best way would be to reinstall the drivers as provided by the manufacturer.
