    Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616E Problem

    All of a sudden my dvd-rom cannot read dvd's and cd's. I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RS620G Desktop running Windows XP. I also have a DVD+-RW/CD-RW drive (HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082B) that works fine....

    I might be confusing the names of each drive but the one that cannot work is the bottom disk drive (which says DVD-ROM).

    I tried using firmware but that won't work for some reason...it says wrong drive or something.

    Hi,

    Was there anything that changed just prior to the drive not working, like installing a new drive, a flash drive or anything? I assume the failed firmware update was an attempt to fix the problem.

    the first thing I would do is, open the side panel and check the power and ribbon cables, if they are ok then boot up in safe mode, and remove the drive under device manager and reboot. The drive will be reinstalled by windows. Next go to start>control panel>administrative tools>computer management>disk management and see if the drive is listed and ok in there, if so then post back.

    Also let us know when you post back, if the drive is attempting to read your disks or not, and I also would make sure you are using a known good disk that has been read by this drive before.

    The drive does attempt to read the dvd (and I tried several of my cd's and dvd's that I've always used before.)

    But when I try to access the dvd from My Computer and click on DVD Drive (E it says to please insert a disk into the drive.

    Would system restore work in this case?

    Have a look in Device Manager and see what the status of the drive is reported as in there. Also, take the side off the case and make sure that the data (Ribbon) cable is firmly plugged into the drive.

    The ribbon is firmly plugged into the drive and the device manager says that it is working properly.

    What else can I do?

    In that case you almost certainly have a hardware failure of the drive. Unfortunately there isn't anything that you can practically do to fix them. At least they're cheap to replace these days.
