can this be done and how?

have a laptop that is very infected...won't let me run a new version NAV2006, installed without a problem, as far as i coulld tell, but is unuasable, just get the splash screen and thats it, but it shows that is running....wierd!!...on line scanners are blocked also....
ok, my question is there a way to cable the system to my home pc which has all the goodies on it and be able to scan and remove any remaning viruses?
    silly question?
    thanks for any help!

If you had another AV program on that laptop then installed NAV, that is one thing you get when they fight over the computer. One of them has to be uninstalled.

McAfee AVERT Stinger would be a good tool to start with.

What os is on that laptop?

If you have one, can you access your HOSTS file? In WinXP you will find it in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ETC. (It is just HOSTS (no file extension), not HOSTS.sam or LMHOSTS.sam) If you have a HOSTS file, open it with Notepad and see if online scanner sites are blocked by
    a)being on the list and
b)having 127.0.0.1 to the left of each URL.
Delete those lines|Save. Did that help?

wojo629--So you can reach all internet sites except online scanners?
On line scanners often require that ActiveX controls be downloaded and that they be permitted to run. You should consider putting the online scanner site into Trusted Sites (uncheck the box "Require Server Verification...). Then see if you can run the scanner.
As far as NAV is concerned, a scan with NAV can take several minutes, like 10-20 minutes or perhaps even longer. It depends on the number of files on your PC. Are you perhaps not waiting long enough?
Yes, you can connect the hard drive on one PC to the hard drive on another. But it you have a CD Burner on the "home" PC and a CD-ROM drive on the laptop, it will be simpler to burn (from the home PC) whatever program you want to use on the laptop and transfer the programs that way. And many of the programs will also fit on floppies, if you have floppies on both PC's.
But if you can reach the download sites for these programs from the laptop (see my first sentence above), then you can just download directly.
You should consider running the Spyware Detectors and HiJackThis mentioned here

You could have skipped the S1 install, SP 2 has he SP1 stuff in it.

I would definately do some follow up work with online scanners.

Glad that worked out for you.

Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a real nice tool also. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Yes, I know it is a BETA, but this is one time that a beta works just fine.
