stoopid?
well, I dunno. Windows Update won't let me get at sp2 as I've already downloaded it; found it at this site and am now downloading it but not running it--SUPPOSEDLY it's the full version, good for either Home or Pro, can be saved on a CD, etc. think it's dangerous?
it's at

progress report
Crunchie
sorry to be slow letting you know what's what w my two minor problems.
I managed to install the new version of Panda's Platinum 200 finally by
1. going into Safe mode and getting rid of Zone Alarm and its friends
2. using hijackthis to get rid of the active x controls for Bitdefender and TrendMicro scanning programs (just in case the "eTrust" reference was really a generic reference to similar programs as well)
so I'm not sure which thing did the trick (or both?) but anyway it worked.
on the non-working help and support files, will soon try using the xp sp2 disk I downloaded from Microsoft mirror site (your suggestion). waiting till I have less work to do at home in case it messes up, and/or until I'm positive I've pummeled my office computer back into submission after the tech guys changed everything around during a security upgrade.
thanks again for all the help!
best,
Tenney

any idea about this?
Hi Crunchie;
no time yet to re-install xp sp2 (my one leftover problem, the missing help files).
but with Panda, I keep getting something like 6,000 spyware files that turn up as undeletable. I compressed them once and moved them to the desktop, but the very next scan the following day showed, again, about 6,000 supposed spyware files back in their old location. here's a cut/paste of just a few of them--any idea what's generating the files, and whether it's really anything to worry about? thanks! :

What is support.com?
C:\Program Files\support.com
They all appear to be in there or the backup folder within the support.com folder.
May want to clear out the contents of the backup folder.

help files (once again)
Crunchie
here I am again after hiatus of a couple months. am finally getting around to trying to restore my xp help files (helpcenter won't open, msinfo won't open, etc). have tried using downloaded xp installation cds (as you suggested) but neither seems to be bootable (I could buy one in a store that would probably be bootable & w a REPAIR function, but want to avoid doing that). Also tried copying the files from my machine at work (xp pro) to home (xp home) but that doesn't seem to help, though I can fiddle some more w re-locating the new files to all the different folders the old files occupy.
but, instead:
am wondering whether you think it's safe to download and run the fix applet at the following site (about which I know nothing--just turned up via google):
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/helpsvcfix.htm
thanks again for all your help,
hope you're doing well,
Tenney

chkdsk /f problem
Crunchie
I'm writing you after a couple of years (hoping you are still there!) w a new, unrelated problem--on my daughter's computer.
it's a basic Compaq running windows xp home edition (updated to sp2 or probably sp3--I remember that stuff about my computer but not always the kids' computers).
anyway: chkdsk /f stall at step 2, index checking--get to 5% and doesn't go further (stalled at exactly the same point when I re-ran it).
computer is operable so I can run hijack this or whatever else by way of diagnostics you think I should run.
thanks!
best,
Tenney, in Tucson (USA)

laptop boot and shuts down (often) VERY slowly
Hi Crunchie this is Tenney in Tucson writing you after about a year or more. Hope you are doing well!
I have a problem w my Gateway laptop (running Windows XP Pro, fully updated):
lately it boots and also shuts down really slowly (2-3 minutes), not all the time but most of the time. The new wrinkle, which is weird, is that when I go to Start and click Shut Down, it can take 2-3 minutes to get me even to the options (shut down, reboot, cancel--whatever they are!)--I've never had that happen before. I disabled a lot of the startup items using an autoruns program from sysinternals recommended by PC Mag, and I also use Norton Startup Manager to delay programs on startup. But mostly the computer starts and shuts down very slowly, though every once in awhile it's really quick. I've run the sophos anti rootkit program and it doesn't find anything, though about a year ago there was maybe a rootkit on the computer which, I think, sopos plus Unhackme were able to eliminate. Anyway here's today's Hijack this log. I'll attach it as a text file as well since that may be easier to read.
Thanks for your help!

Hi again .
Please re-run hijackthis again, select Do a system scan and save a logfile. When notepad opens, go to the Format Tab and de-select Word Wrap.
Highlight the entire text and post the log back here.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebyt...are_d5756.html ) to your desktop.
* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* At the end, be sure to checkmark the Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware , then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Download the update from here if you have problems.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan , then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
* Post the log back here .
The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Make sure that you restart the computer.
