Well it could be that the hardware is just too old to run XP. I'd make sure that it's suitable before going any further:

    Question

I forgot that it also mentioned making changes in the advanced options?
I have helped with several XP installations and I don't see where hardware is an issue...

I sure would appreciate any help I can get. I am a senior citizen who keeps my mind sharp by learning as much as I can about computing

Are you settingthat up as a dual boot?
Or are you trying to do a upgrade?

We really need the actual error message(s). And the notebook specifications would be helpful, the fact is that many machines of Windows98 vintage don't run XP well at all.

I'm fixing this notebook up to give to my Granddaughter, she ask if it would be possible to upgrade it to Win XP, I told her I would try. She has the notebook now and I won't be seeing her for a few days so I won't be able to give the actual error message until then. I was hoping to have an answer before I see her again. She thinks I'm the smartest thing around and I don't know how to tell her I'm not

If you can do a clean install, you should be OK.

Lot of times those upgrades can cause hair pulling errors.

I can't remember, how much information with the current OS will be lost with a clean install

It will all be lost with a clean install. But it's the only wqay really, Win98 never upgrades well to XP - the two OS's are utterly different.
