    Executables causing screen refresh

When right clicking any exe file in explorer for properties or shortcut exe to any program on desktop, my screen refreshes, closes all windows and puts me back to desktop. The machine is virus free(Kaspersky). WinnXP Pro SP2.
Any ideas anyone, its been 3 months now and frustrating me, thanks.

Hi, welcome to VDR, this sure sounds like it may be caused by a virus, & your Virus scanner is not detecting it, I would get a second opinion by going to the link below & doing an online virus scan. Sidewinder

Hi subouk, welcome to Virtual Dr

Get your WinXP CD handy, then go to Start>Run and type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. That'll replace any missing or corrupt system files.

    Hello subouk

Sometimes problems with right click can be caused by a poorly coded context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc)

    Download ShellExView
    http://www.snapfiles.com/get/shellexview.html

Then disable one by one any third party shell extension (not XP ones)until you find the one causing the problem

(type Context Menu. Sort by this column to make it easy).

    Executables causing screen refresh

First I'd like to say 'thank you' to you guys.
    Did the Trend, machine clean.
Did the system file check, no problems.
Dunedin, I d/l ythe shellviw prog, disabled ALL except Microsoft, and the problem has gone. I can now access the right-click menu.
I will now re-enable one by one and will post any info on the culprit for future advice to the community.
Trouble is, the ones I disabled are all shells from reputable software Co's, i.e. Adobe, Jasc, Corel etc. We'll see.

    Thank You all.

Yeah, it was a non-MS entry in Registry referencing a file called CmdLineExt03.dll which was in system32 dir, unable to establish source
but found some VERY interesting info HERE:
    http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/pr...ext03.dll.html

File deleted, all OK now, thnx.

Akbar: All this is belonging to a copy protection (sony software driven copy protection). See also: Link
Geez, Sony seems to be doing a lot lately. See this thread in VirtualDr.

I have done some searching on this, and the link below gives the experiences of others. There is a suggestion that there might be more than one form of this dll, and that one of them might be spyware/hijacker.

I read discussions at quite a few different sites and there was always someone saying it was nasty along with others who said it was just connected to gaming.

Just keep an eye out for it in case it returms and turns out to be nasty.
