I really need to brush up on my dos!!!!!

How do I redirect the output from a serial port to a dos shell,

i set the port up with

mode com1 9600,n,8,1,p

that worked

then i tried

mode tty1=com1

that didnt, meaby i thinking unix (tty1 was worth a try), what is the command to redirect the com1 to the dos shell.
