DOS program keeps closing when I hit Enter?

I have this old DOS program I'm trying to use in WinXP. I've opened the CMD.EXE but it gives me C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. How would I enter the name of the program from that, if say it resided on my desktop? Thanks
