This sys is back in the shop with a white-on-black screen on boot. Here's the message:
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

The owner claims that the troubles started with persistent popups involving requests for installation of HP services, all of which had previously been disabled/deleted by me to conserve system resources for a speedier system. FWIW, I had previously upgraded the RAM to the max of 8GB, with excellent results.
I'd like to try a fix before running all the required steps for Broni's Intensive Care Unit and admitting it there, as I have no way of knowing if there's also an infection going on here.
Should I begin with the Startup Repair option?
