A New (to me) Malware Scam
I was on YouTube. The uploader had a link to watch similar video. I usually don't trust these links but I watched his guy's stuffs before and they had been all legit, so I took the bait. Bad idea. The link brought me to a site that immediately hijacked my browser and computer. It shows a full screen page with FBI tittle on the top left. Saying you have violated copyright by trying to view protected video and they (the FBI) is locking your computer down. And now you are fined $200. They direct you to go to Walmart, etc to wire them the fine. Only really naive persons will fall for this one. Really, the FBI does this! How laughable.
Anyway, couldn't get rid of this stupid thing in normal Windows environment. So booted into Safe Mode, ran AV and Malwarebytes scans. Didn't id anything. Thanks god this nasty was not that sophisticated. I did a System Restore. Afterward, ran another round of AV and Malwarebytes scans. This time both id and removed a few things. No more problem.
Just FYI.
