Trying to install XP on an old HDD that I thought was OK! (The HD has been formatted and partitioned) The initial boot from the OS CD and initial install goes OK. When the program calls for the computer to restart, it restarts and boots from the HDD. It will usually proceed to the point where the "Windows XP" splash screen comes up with three blue dots underneath that travel from left to right. Frequently, it freezes at this stage and goes no further. Occasionally, it proceeds on the the "Windows Setup" screen which appears for a few seconds. The screen then blanks out for a second or two and then comes up with a light blue screen with a mouse pointer in the center. If it makes it this far, it always freezes at this point and goes not further with the setup.

Any idea as to the cause? Could the HDD be defective?

Thanks for any help,
John
